Riff: M.I.A. – “Borders”

Nov 29, 2015

Guns blow doors to the system/Yeah fuck ’em when we say we’re not with them/We’re solid and we don’t need to kick them/This is North, South, East and Western

from Borders lyrics by M.I.A.

Highfalutin political banter delivered from a pristine, ivory tower. The message is clear, but oversimplified to the point of irrelevancy, the musical equivalent to wearing a ‘Stop the Violence’ shirt. The beat is unobtrusive and is by her standards a more subdued sound. She adds a dash of autotune to her voice which speaks to the heart of a trend that desperately needs to be shelved.
