Lupe Fiasco is one of the sharpest lyricists in the game; at one point considered to be the leader of a new more conscious generation. An inconsistent output, however, has muddied the conversation. But by the looks of it he’s ready to reassert himself and achieve the promise that fans have always expected.

In a series of tweets headed into last weekend (October 27) the Chicago-spawned MC revealed how he was blackballed by Atlantic for being too political and “for standing up to the journalists & bullshitters.” He went on to emphasize his love for writing and how lyrics have always been a priority tweeting, “But when it comes 2 lyrics (which is the ONLY thing I care about) you’d be very hard pressed 2say I’m not one of the best ever #TBE for real.”

Fiasco continued by saying that he’s won nearly every accolade there is to win and that the only thing left to do “is to be the GOAT Lyricist…

To put his money where his mouth is Fiasco followed up his statements with two new songs, “Black Power L-Word” and “KJazz.” Both cuts have him flexing hard over slamming beats; each packed to the gills with scathing criticisms, pop culture references and tongue-in-cheek wordplay.

It seems like every few months Lupe Fiasco teases at a comeback, only for him to pull back and do something brash like announce his retirement. Most lyricists don’t have that kind of latitude with their fans, but Lupe is an exception to the rule. Lyrically it’s hard to deny his skills, and like most artists of his ilk it’s best to let him release projects when he’s ready rather than force it.
