Where you may have heard them: their 2007 album, Night Drive, was a huge critical success. More recently though, their instrumental song “Tick of the Clock” (from the same album) was featured in the movie, Drive.

Who they are: Chromatics is not a band with a streamlined past. Based in Portland, the group has experienced multiple lineup changes over the years, along with a major shift in sound: today the group has found its footing in the sound of Italo Disco, miles from the punk/lo-fi music in which they originally trafficked. The current lineup includes Adam Miller (the band’s only remaining oringal member), Johnny Jewel (often credited with the success of the new sound), Nat Walker, and Ruth Radelet.

New music: Chromatics recently announced that they will be dropping their new album, Kill for Love in January 2012. It will be their first since 2007’s Night Drive and will be released on the label, Italians Do It Better. The album’s song and accompanying video are now streaming online and available for purchase on iTunes.

My two cents: The song is beyond great. It takes everything Night Drive set up for the band and builds upon that specific creative sound. If nothing else, it certainly bodes well for the long-awaited forthcoming album. Mark your calendars.

Notable Lyrics

Everybody’s got a secret to hide
Everyone is slipping backwards
I drank the water and I felt alright
I took a pill almost every night
In my mind I was waiting for change
While the world just stayed the same
Everybody’s got a secret to hide
Everyone is slipping backwards
