Antoine Dominique “Fats” Domino Jr., the roly-poly post-war, ivory-tinkling rock legend, arrived at the Ritz ballroom in Bridgeport, Connecticut on this day back in 1955 to find that police shut the man’s scheduled show down.

Their near-riot reasoning, in lieu of rowdy antics that just happened at the nearby New Haven Arena, summarized in a newspaper headline from the day: “Fear of Rock-Roll Nixes Conn.” Damn you, rock ‘n’ roll, with your backbeat and your use-it attitude. Or as Fats put it once, “Ain’t That a Shame:”

You made me cry, when you said goodbye
Ain’t that a shame
My tears fell like rain
Ain’t that a shame
You’re the one to blame
