Tim McGraw - Southern Voice Lyrics

Artist: Tim McGraw

Album: Southern Voice

  • Songwriters: Bob Dipiero, Tom Douglas

Hank Williams sang it, Number 3 drove it
Chuck Berry twanged it, Will Faulkner wrote it
Aretha Franklin sold it, Dolly Parton graced it
Rosa Parks rode it, Scarlett O. chased it

Smooth as the hickory wind
That blows from Memphis down to Apalachicola
It's, "Hi y'all, did ya eat well?
Come on in, I'm sure glad to know ya"

Don't let this old gold cross
And this Allman Brothers t-shirt throw ya
It's cicadas making noise
With the Southern voice

Hank Aaron smacked it, Michael Jordan dunked it
Pocahontas tracked it, Jack Daniels drunk it
Tom Petty rocked it, Dr. King paved it
Bear Bryant won it, Billy Graham saved it

Smooth as the hickory wind
That blows from Memphis down to Apalachicola
It's, 'Hi y'all, did ya eat well?
Come on in, I'm sure glad to know ya"

Don't let this old gold cross
And this Crimson Tide t-shirt throw ya
It's cicadas making noise
With the Southern voice

Jesus is my friend, America is my home
Sweet iced tea and Jerry Lee
Daytona Beach, that's what gets to me
I can feel it in my bones

Smooth as the hickory wind
That blows from Memphis down to Apalachicola
It's, 'Hi y'all, did ya eat well?
Come on in, I'm sure glad to know ya"

Don't let this old gold cross
And this Charlie Daniels t-shirt throw ya
We're just boys making noise
With the Southern voice, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Southern voice
I got a Southern voice
Southern voice

What does this song mean to you?

Such a politically liberal biased song. Not one mention of Robert E. Lee or Jefferson Davis. Oh, there is mention of Pocahontas, Michael Jordan, MLK, Rosa Parks, Aretha Franklin.... Need I go on?

Why do we have to always dissect a song, cann't we just listen and enjoy it without always having to find fault, or interpreting into something that it wasn't meant to say

Omj this is an amazing song. No matter how you put it this amazing and so is Tim McGraw.

As a Southerner born and raised in the great state of Alabama I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!! I'm also a fan of the Auburn Tigers, but get a kick out of the reference to Bear Bryant and the Crimson Tide. For me it is a wonderful and positive reference to my home state. Folks will always have varying opinions about this song, that's one of the things that makes this country great. Just don't forget to crank up the volume and enjoy it.

Southern is a spirit you can have no matter where you are from . (I am from the south) It's a feeling deep inside and only you know if you are or are not "southern." You either get it or you don't.
    Love the song.
Really interesting info about William Jennings Bryan.

MEANING??: "Old gold cross" refers to William Jennings Bryan's "Cross of GHold" speech in which he took up the struggle of largely rural, southern and western farmers to maintain the states' independent Silver standard as the basis for U.S. monetary value as opposed to the Federal gold standard: it stands, generally, for "States' Rights"--> "don't let it throw you" means it's not the States Rights associated with slavery and segregation of the Old South, but rather the more modern, independent spirit of the New South.
"The cicadas" are making nouse in the Southern Voice: this refers to the metamorphosis he cicadas undergo as they turn into mature adults-->just as the Old South is metamorphing into the New South.
Similarly, just because he sports a "Crimson Tide" t-shirt--and by implication roots for Alabama--doesn't mean you should conclude that he's rooting for, or identifies with, the Old South.
It's a son f abiout the New Soputhern Pride: the sputh of artisits, tninkers, integrated athletics, civil rights heroes, etc.
    Any thoughts?

Yes, He is saying don't let the t-shirt fool you because, unfortunately, a lot of people associate being Southern with being ignorant. Guess what? we're not and that's all he means... and by the way of course he means Scarlett O'Hara! LOL she is the ULTIMATE southern belle

G'day mate, don't throw those cd's away. It dosen't matter where you come from as long as you like the music. Do you think Tim gonna care if you're from the north or the south. All he cares about is wether his songs have touched you and your life in some way. I live in Australia and I understand the song just as much as anyone else

Anyone who criticizes the south is just jealous. Like mama always said, "There are two kinds of people in the world, those from the south and those that wish they were" The people he mentions in this song are but a few of the southerners who have made this country great. Southerners have contributed more to this country than all of the other reigons put together.

OMG....I feel a little dumber after reading some of these comments. People Gaaah! Its a SONG. It's meant to make you feel happier and give you a boost for your day. This song is so totally about southern pride. It makes me proud to be southern and reminds me of my heritage. we arent just dumb redneck hick because we were born into it...we choose to what degree our redneckness should be to suit ourselves personally. You put this with the new Alafreakinbama song and you got a feild party that will go on for a week! You made us proud Tim.

I agree. I don't understand the "t-shirt throw you" part. It makes no sense to me. Is he saying that someone who wears those types of t-shirts are viewed as ignorant, and that you shouldn't let that throw you because people with a southern voice aren't actually ignorant? Something like that!? I don't really get that though because I don't see how someone wearing a certain type of t-shirt can say anything about how smart, or civilized, or whatever someone is... Can anyone explain any other ideas?

Scarlett O'Hara, Gone with the Wind, a chasing after the wind, swept up, following dreams...

  • Anonymous

Um, no. He's referring to Scarlett O-hanson. Chasing the paparazzi. Yeah, thassit.

totally awesome some tim... great work guys!!! you ARE da MAN!! :) YEEHAW!!

  • Anonymous

It's a southern Thing Yall wouldnt understand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

is that a reference to gone with the wind when he says "Scarlett O' chased it"?

  • Anonymous

It means dont let the fact that I wear an old gold cross or a crimson tide T shirt fool you, I have a southern voice. Like so many other southerners that have changed our country and made a difference. We are offen seen as ignorant but He is saying that we have made a difference in the past and we will in the future. We have a voice load and clear like the cicadas. The point of the song isnt just that he is southern but that he will make a difference. To me its political Im not sure what he is speaking out for.
