they both wrote lyrics to that song individually. there is no intended explicit meaning to this song. it is open to interpretation. Trying to make sense of it defies its meaning...

Most musicians ive ever heard interviewed say they have their own meanings behind what they sing, but that the whole point in sharing it with an audience is that they love how a song can take on a life of its own and speak to different people in totally different ways, with totally different meanings. That the song takes on a life of its own. I think our own life experience and where we are at goes into everything in our interpretation of the world around us. To me the song is about a couple that have chased happiness and travelled many places, and have finally found everything they want in each other, I want to play it at my wedding, I think its beautiful and simple and I also know its just my opinion, but lifes pretty good with rose coloured glasses!! :O)

When looking at the video and with an understanding of the lyrics, you will see that the lyrics seem to mock the video, therefore mocking the "perfect" relationship they once had. It's mocking such a thing as a fairy tale ending, and exposing the audience to the harsh realities of marriage, or a failing marriage.

The meaning is simple and described well. Its a message from one partner to the other stating that after all the places they have been and seen they are happiest with them. The burning bridge represents their willingness to disconnect from society and be happy together alone in a better place. Thats why it states if this were to go under its a risk I'm willing to take they are just madly enough. Thats what i think.

To me it doesn't sound any happy or romantic at all, "I'll never explore"!!! that should be one of the saddest prhases ever. "where would I be" that is the regreatfull prhase you said each time you miss one opportunity to try something different. Now if you include the video to our disscussion, you will find that this hystory is developed in the purgatory, repeating the same situation something like a life imprisonment just because you are not able to overlook somethig missing the point of things that really matter the most.

i think this song is about someone who was a bit promiscuous and used to explore different people. Now they don't feel the need to be so promiscuous. They don't want to explore any more people. They are happy, fulfilled, content. They've burned the bridge to their past ways i.e. consciously decieded not to go back to how they were before. I think its quite sweet really, a modern day love song.

melody of this song is kinda similar to the hurts song wonderful life. for real i don't know why, but for me it's very similar.

i think they should use this song as a soundtrack to the new twilight movie. it would fit in just perfect

I think perhaps many of you are trying too hard to interpret the lyrics of this song when it appears quite straightforward. There obviously is more out there, and she is not naïve enough to believe that she has found the only happiness/love in the world but has found a happiness so strong as to negate the need to go out and find any other. Content and happy. Yes one could go out and continue to search for what else is out there, but they have found a love which renders further searching unnecessary. The overriding sentiment is that of the ability to leave, but no desire to do so.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful song. This is what I thought Islands was about before seeing the video... Not certain that it's about comfort and codependency. The lyrics seem a little more fiery than that. Of course lines such as 'so now I'll never explore' have connotations of boredom in a relationship, but it seems more like they don't want to explore as they have their new object of desire. The word 'now' is used three times in the chorus which makes me think this song is about a new relationship, full of passion when you really don't want anyone else. They are 'froze by desire' and reminded of the start of new relationships... 'back to where I've been'. Basically I thought the song might be about the honeymoon period of relationships. The song title islands reminds me of how isolated some couples can be during this time- completely absorbed in eachother and ignorant of everything and everyone else around them. The lovers are on their own little island, and do not need to explore the rest of the world... at least not yet.

Wow. Music is amazing because people can interpret the same song so differently. I took the song to be about infidelity with someone that does "freeze you by desire". You are then "found out" and "burn" your previous "bridge," "taking a risk" even if the new relationship "goes under." She's saying I've left the other dude and now I don't have to leave when I'm with you, I can stay forever. Yeah.

doesnt it just seem like two "friends" falling in love (doesnt even have to mean close friends)? the girl who explored lots of other people and overlooked what she already had, maybe a little deliberately. the guy saying its a risk i have to take, i have to say how i feel, even if i lose out. as someone else said love is just love. and love is a risk. do there have to be reams of lyrics to be profound? major wordplay? i find it minimalist and succinct. maybe some of the posters here are going through some STUFF....

I completely, totally agree with the Anonymous person who posted on May 4th. The music video definitely shows that, and I think they hit it right on the head.

We all bring our own interpretation to a song.
Titled, "Islands", there's a contentment of being in a relationship that you don't mind what's going on around you, fires and desires, that you are completely content. The song is in a major key, there's no melancholic note whatsoever. What's love is love, it just IS. There's no codependency, they've (since it's a duet) seen the sights and cities, and are giving in to each other. ♥

the song has a melancholic tone and seems to romanticize codependent relationships. it's sort of on par with a"it's only when i lose myself in someone else, that i find myself." vibe. it seems that the person singing is likening committing to a relationship to confining oneself to a closed or isolated area. i especially like the bridge-on-fire line. it reminds me of the expression about"burning your bridges". i appreciate the slightly obsessive view of commitment.

To me it seems pretty clear that this song is about two people who were in a comfortable relationship and loved each other very much, but still always had the itch to see if anything else or better was out there before being able to fully commit. And that after both exploring, they've now realised that they no longer have to look, that nothing better exists then what they had, and now can fully commit to their love for each other.

but maybe it's just cuz thats what i'm going through haha, and what I hope it will turn out to be in the end. Amaaazing song though, i LOVE them.

i think it's about someone who has just ended a long-term comfortable relationship in order to be with someone new who they are perfect for, but have had to settle for friendship with until now..

I think the speaker is settling for the relationship she has, which is easy if not ideal; something she's grown used to. Struggling over the idea of belonging to someone else reminded me of Tegan and Sara's "Are You Ten Years Ago." The concept is relevant to a large demographic but not yet overused, so I wouldn't go so far as to clasify it as "poser asshattery," Jan.31 Anonymous! Cleverly phrased though!

Actually, the drivel is more like the lyrics that run out of a stoner who thinks, like wow, I am so effing profound, when in fact they mean nothing at all; but when someone puts it to music, it sounds good, so no one cares that the words are just poser asshattery.

i think its about a women whom is worn down by the trials of meaningless relationships. shes finally found someone who gets her, relates to her, so she doesnt have to "explore" anymore. shes his and shes finally happy :]
