  I am as well a firm believer in god and took this song as uncertain at first until I listened closely to the lyrics and come to no more of their music. For me I believe he is saying he lost the girl and was at breaking point and felt alone and confused and felt at that time he did not have god and then was found as he become to realize more and wasn't as lost. We all get angry and bitter at times and ? Even when we no we are not suppose to.. and I myself went through something very similar with my first love whome commited suicide.. so of course I felt lost and insecure and felt I could have saved his life. Especially after realizing he had been trying to tell me. I feel this is what he is saying in the song..

  To me, it just says what it says- "where were you when everything was falling apart?" "Why'd you have to wait to find me?"...why weren't you there? It's about having to get through things by yourself and wondering where the hero went, why you're alone, why you have to fight alone. And then there's the fleeting happiness mentioned of "her" coupled with "no way to know how long she will be next to me", the uncertainty. Someone who has lost so much, had to see so much go down. Sure, there's Christianity involved, but the song works for an deity, any protector or hero that let you down. And for some reason, I love this song. It makes a point. And I cry DX.

  i am also christian yet i don't think this song is bad.. i can relate to it. I've felt the same way. i have lost the person i have loved the most and i also felt like God came too late. although i know He was there all along. but we all have struggles in our spiritual life and anyone saying they don't is lying... if everything goes wrong in your life you can't help but wonder where God is, even if you hate the fact that you are questioning Him.

  The song is great regardless of it being suicidal or not!
  The song is just saying he waited and waited and at a point got tired of waiting for that one called that would reassure him things would be ok. So when he mentions the girl he is putting it as in when we do bad things we aren't suppose we feel happy but that happiness is only for the moment after its all over we go back to feeling sad, alone,ect . He goes back into waiting but just when he is about to give up the call he's been waiting for happens.

  I respect all songs and God. And it doesn't mean that the lyrics include God smoking his cigarette I can't respect this too. Because I know that God knows everything, every single thing and that he understands my faith in him.   This song is not uplifting. I think the singer is forgetting his faith. I don't like to hear the message it sounds too hopeless and so filled with much hopelessness it drives the minds of the listeners to a dark place that suicide reins in. That is why so many have "mistaken" it for a song about suicide. Even though the artist was able to make the song without clarity of the message it is a wasted effort and leaves the meaning too open to interpretation, I myself called it a suicide song till i read it here...I could care less what it is about.   I don't understand how do many people get this wrong. This song is about SUICIDE. And hear me out b4 you dismiss the notion. In the beginning he smokes his LAST cigarette. Then "finds God" or "meets his maker", as the common phrase goes. God says "ask me anyhing".   i think this is more to someone that who was probably always there for him. Then things went wrong, maybe he hurt her. This her was probably the one person that knew him, and that could always makes things better. And right when everything is going wrongs and no one is there to help, he thinks of this person, remembering how she once founds him and whipped him off.   Probably this is not what The Fray meant with the song, but it's interesting to me that you could possibly turn the whole thing around. Maybe it's God asking "Where were you? Why did you have to wait?"
  So often you hear people complaining about their life and shaking their fists in anger to heaven. But when we're having everything we need, do we give the same credit towards that person? Life is really hard sometimes and it's understandable that we don't feel treated fairly and that we get angry. But we're not always fair either.

  I like this song because it relates to me in so many ways. 2 months ago I lost my son at 5 months gestation ( pregnancy) it was the hardest thing I've ever had to go through. I wanted to be a mother so bad. After I went through all the crying I went through anger at god for taking my precious Tristan. I asked where were you when he needed you most? I was never a religious person and never went to church but one day I woke up just believing the lord is there. I could feel his presence. Now I go to church. He definitely found me and I now realize my son had greater purposes.

  Is it not possible that we are all put here innocent. We make mistakes (sins) from a lack of understanding this world before us. We allow ourselves to give in to greed & lust to mention a few, and then we allow ourselves to be a part of crime, rape, pedophile acts, self mutilation, arson and a mass of other things that we do out of anger and frustration. We are put here innocent, remember that. As we fall victim too these weaknesses, these evils of, become more convinced that THIS is the only way, this is the only "life" and we begin to give up on ourselves. IE: we stop protecting that nerd in school, because others start to pick on us for it. OR we stop showing a boy or girl attention because other people are passing judgement on him or her. WE ALLOW OURSLEVES TO GIVE IN TO HATE, JUDGEMENT... SINS. Due to this, we are constantly brought to a new place in life, we are perhaps reborn, numerous times, each time (due to sin) we hide further within ourselves, afraid to stand up to the bullies. Afraid to admit our mistakes because we know we did wrong. We eventually end up sinking lower and lower into our own personal hell as we live each life. Not allowing ourselves to accept and make right for these wrongs we have done to others and ourselves.
  
  Is it too much to think outside the box, understand that this world could very well be a holographic world, a room of spirits we are brought into in a whole different place where we must battle our own sins, our demons, until we can accept them? we live in fear of these demons, allow them to threaten us and if we eventually fall so deep we can not and damn near do not know how to get back up, we reach for a bible, answers, something that we can find peace in... but it does not always work this way. because these demons just want to keep pulling us back in... the only answer to finding god is in finding peace among ourselves, peace in our hearts, FORGIVENESS for those that have tress-passed against us.
  
  Imagine one day, while you stood in shock having just watched your son or daughter being hit by a vehicle. Or letting go of their hand while they slowly lay dying on a hospital bed from cancer...If he put his hand on your shoulder and said "Do not worry, watch this" as he stepped aside and slowly your child or friend, etc was brought back to life and perfect health... WOULD YOU SECOND GUESS the right thing to do if someone was standing in front of you with a gun? would you fear them? If you walked around the corner to see a man beating on a woman, would you stop him? or be afraid of him attacking you? .... If you KNEW without a doubt that there is a god above that could and would always bring you back into the light, give you protection from the demons of the dark... Would you back down and stop talking to that "nerd" or stop liking that boy or girl because he or she was seen "picking his/her nose"?
  
  I think to me THAT is what this song represents. That god is out there, bringing the light to our heart, the ability to love and forgive... constantly re lighting our fires and giving us the chance to let our love for one another SHINE.
  
  We are all Hells angels. Its only a matter of time before we become consumed by the anger and hurt. the hatred, the jealousy and other sins... it is only a short time before we decide to allow our neighbor the ability to let his opinion on imagrants or sandniggers or her opinion on fat chicks become OUR opinions. It is the LACK of SPEAKING UP and taking your part in sharing this love you KNOW in your heart is RIGHT.

  I am a believer in God, but I think the word God in this song means someone important in his life. Like maybe a father that has never really been in his life. When the song says "losing her" I think it might be his mom and now he feels alone (lying on the floor, meaning broken)but yet surrounded by family.   I think watching the music video definitely highlights the direction they're going in with respect to the music video. I don't feel it's inappropriate or disrespectful, but rather just reflects the natural emotions and helplessness that people undergo when confronting a tragedy. We're not necessarily hoping to find a scapegoat for our problems, but when faced with tough times, we express our frustrations, which is completely natural. I think this song and the music video reflect the natural, instinctual responses that we experience when we face tragedy and injustices.
  
  Also, while I agree that people do control their own destinies, I feel it is only to a certain extent. Think about innocent lives taken away by the minute due to social and political injustices that they have no control over. How is their misfortune the result of karma if they are born into such a time? Of course for those who believe in a religious figure, yes God is there, however, while we control our destinies in one sense, we can't control the opportunities, misfortunes, and good or bad luck that affect us. For instance, we can't choose who our parents are, the existing structures and norms that exist when we enter this world, etc. And in this desperation of having such lack of control, we become frustrated and ask why? Why couldn't we have been spared from this tragedy and from our misfortunes? This song reflects those emotions very melodiously.

  I was with my ex husband for 10 yrs..he possibly could be bi-polar, I never knew..instead I enabled and made excuses for his violent behavior. I was the only one who he could put on a pedalstal and in the next moment make me feel lower than dirt. Once again, I enabled this behavior. Things got worse and abusive. He cheated nonstop. I got sick of it, he left me for another women. Then there was another woman after that. I finally divorced him and got a restraining order. He still tries to send me messages. No longer threatens me, instead dedicates this song...this song hurts me...because I am on the other end of it. He is singing to me, which makes me feel like he still has excuses for his behavior.   Personally, I dont think this song is very religious at all. It has God once in the song, not throughout it. If you watch the video and piece it together, the girl is dead. He didnt say he found God, it says "I found God". For all you know it could be talking about how the girl died and she found God, its from her perspective, not his. I feel the whole song is from her perspecitive. Shes dying, and she wants to know where everyone was to help her survive. The guy smoking his last cig was prolly one of the ones she needed.   Hmm, as a non-theist, I have to take a bit of a different stance than most of the people here. I actually -quite- like this song lyric-wise, as it seems to be criticizing the Judeo-Christian concept of an active, omnipotent, moral God. The singer in this song is demanding, quite fairly, to know why God, supposing he exists, if he had the power to intervene, did not.
  
  (Sorta the whole "If God is omnipotent, but not moral, then he is evil. If god is moral but not omnipotent, then why call him "God". If God is omnipotent and moral, then whence cometh evil." argument.)
  
  Technically it's claiming a belief in a non-moral, presumably omnipotent God; but more accurately, I think it's challenging the Judeo-Christian concept of an involved God, citing the great amount of evil in the world he does nothing to save the innocent from.
  
  So, I applaud the singer, and a big FUCK YOU to Yahweh!

  Adding my two cents...
  I think this song is about a guy who's just committed suicide, probably threw himself from a building (on the corner of First and Amistad where he's surrounded by people who saw him jump) and being dead he finally meets God who tells hims he can ask him anything now, which is why he asks "where were you?" meaning when I needed you.   I think that the writer wanted us all to have our own interpretation of the song. To some of us that may mean that we are searching for God and questioning where God is, for others it may mean that we are frustrated with people around us and wonder why they aren't there for us when we need them. Either way I think it is a song about struggling and questioning, but having faith that it will get better in time.

  When I read the lyrics I interpret them as a man being in an abusive relationship... where he's the abuser.
  
  One day he goes too far and his eyes are opened, but it's too late. He realizes that he's taken the life of the only person who really knew him. He drops to the floor next to the woman he loves, where he starts to question God and why he didn't stop him. He tells God that he never heard from Him... no signs, no nothing. Now... he's feeling lost and insecure... because he never knew God. He calls on God to help him, but again, he feels it's too late... so that lost feeling surrounds him.
  
  Perhaps he's also surrounded by her blood and he doesn't know how much longer she'll be alive... so he blames God for not being there... to save her... from himself.
  
  In an earlier post someone quotes the songwriter to stating that he had been dealing with a ton of family and friend issues for quite awhile. Perhaps this song is a reflection of something that took place and how that person felt or maybe it's something that they did.
  
  On a sidenote, it's my belief that God never leaves us alone. He's constantly calling us, it's just up to each of us to open our eyes and see what he's trying to tell us. It's NEVER TOO LATE to call on God, He's always there... waiting.

  I think the best part about music is that you can interpret it different ways, so whether you think it's God talking to a person or the person talking to God, you can find meaning in it somehow. It makes sense several ways to me, depending on how you look at it, and it doesn't make the song any better or worse either way.   Most of you are wrong in thinking this is some anti-god song.
  In fact every single member of the Fray professes to be Christian. In this song they are asking God, "Where were you when life sucked?" which is a very good question. Despite this question they go on to say how God still made himself revealed to them.   I agree with a few posts on here in that I think the lyrics are meant to portray the feelings of someone while they are still hurt. Most people will question where God was at one point or another. Or why God would let something happen to them. To me the song isn't saying God wasn't there - it is simply the human reaction to stress - the feeling as though NO ONE is there. . . but in reality, God is always there.

  i feel this song is about the feeling that god is robbing you, that he isn't being fair, and the anger we all have towards him if something doesn't seem to go the way we want. the speaker ends up finding god, or rather, feels like god finally found him, but he took too long, and maybe he didn't answer in time to save what the speaker ended up losing. the speaker lost someone close to him and blames god.
  i can relate to this because i used to be lost, and thought i was so lost that even god couldn't find me, that he took his time and was far too late. but he is never late, only we can't always see that right away.

  if you watch the video, you see that there was a car accident, and the girl is laying on the pavement. so i think the lyrics are what she would say--lying on the floor, surrounded by paramedics, etc. i think the fray is trying to tap into how people feel after a loss and how the actual victim as well as their loved ones would feel. they are wondering why God would let this happen to them. But at the end of the vid everything starts flloating, and the girl opens her eyes to show that she is in fact alive. I think this shows how God is still there, even though it seems so hopeless--everything happens for a reason.

  The song is not about God finding him, it's about him finding God! The first line says "I found God" therefore when it later says "You found me" - that is God talking. God says "Why'd you have to wait to find me, Where were you?" This means that God is always there waiting for us to turn to Him. But too often, it's "just a little late". We need to keep God in our lives all the time...not only praying to him but thanking and praising him. He's waiting to answer our call!

  I think that he's trying to ask God where he was while he (the singer) was going through struggles and tough times. He feels as if God sort of "kicked him to the curb" and then "found him." It reminds me of the common question about why does God let bad things happen to good people, or just people in general; things like natural disasters, people dying, families suffering, etc. I've experienced some rough times in my life and I've had friends come and go and turn their backs on me, but as a Christian, God has always been there for me and I'm positive that he's always gonna love you too despite what you've done and the fact that you're not perfect.
  The part about God "smoking a cigarette" makes him more relatable to people. Everyone wants to place God in a box and say that he is this, this, and this, but we are made in his image. We are not perfect like he is, but we are still made in his image.   I know that the writer feels like God is not close and not answering. And I know that the video means something else. But something for you to think about.

  Hm, /to me/ this is how I see this song:
  It's about him being broken after the death of his partner.
  He finds God on a corner of a street smoking cigarettes, chilling and relaxing despite him going through a rough time. He becomes angry, and asks God where has he been when he was struggling over the death of his partner /why he lets all these bad things happen ("leaving no messages...taking all he wants..etc").
  
  Of course this is the literal meaning...but the thing that really stood out to me was, in the first stanza he asks, "Where've you been?" and God replies, "Ask anything".
  This convo occurred "on the corner of 1st and Amistad" where /he found God/ which signifies that when you ASK and seek, God will come to your aid.
  
  Sometimes bad things just happen. But when you ask for help, God will come--he's always there, you just have to go find him. It's us who fall away from him, not him who falls away from us.

  Evil cannot be eliminated, because we have all inherited Original Sin from Adam & Eve (that is, an inclination to sin). We have sin because God created us with free will, and you CAN choose to turn away from God and do something morally wrong. Look at Genesis. God floods the world, but the Tower of Babel still pops up. He can work through our actions to accomplish his will, but he can't control our decisions.

  I think this song actually has a very hopeful tone to it. Yes, as soon as God tells him to "Ask anything" he explodes just like any child would not understanding what has been happening. It seems there was a loved girl that was lost, and that among other things escalates to song into its climax, what we see is the swelling of emotion that happens in everyone when tradgety hits. First there is quiet shock, like the beginning of the song. Slow, and mesmurizing, then anger bursts out, building on its self, then comes depression and hopelessness. Which is how ever new hopeful time of our life begins. We find something to replace to whole. In this case the artist found the only thing eternal we can find to fill the whole.   This song definately has incredible Christian Meaning. The words &#039You Found Me&#039 to me means that He was crying out to God when he was at his weakest point saying "Yes God, You found me!   Hi! I'm a Christian and I just want to comment on this song. It really depends on how each person interprets this song. Opinions are gonna be different. But here's what I think.
  
  This guy has just gone through maybe the worst part of his life. We could all relate to that. Our usual reaction after going through something really part is blaming God, right? We tend to question where He was when we were suffering, why He allowed things like that to happen. But when you reflect over the lyrics carefully, there is hope. God has always been there. He steps in when we are at our worst, our lowest, and when we are totally lost. We tend to think He's late but that's not true.   My opinion about this song is as follows:
  This person (the narrator) has barely survived an attempt to end his life, seemingly because he lost his girlfriend. She apparently has died, maybe she was dying for quite a long time and he was waiting for God to intervene and save her.
  When that didn't happen, this person was devasted and went off the deep end and tried to kill himself and while he was lying on the floor, God did intervene and did not allow his death to happen. This person is now questioning God about where he has been all this time, where was He when he needed Him to be there.

When you are finally at your lowest point, you find God, which is why the line makes sense that God is "all alone, smoking his last cigarette".   I think that this song is about how God is closest when we are at our lowest, and we truly realize that life cannot be lived in our own power. I think this song reflects somewhat on the subject matter of "How to Save A Life". In this song they outline some of the 12 Steps in trying to reach a friend and help them change/save their life. Step One says that life was out of control and had become unmanageable. This allows us to look for something or someone else outside of ourselves to make life work (God). Step two is realizing that there is a higher power that can fix our lives. Step three is turning our will and lives over to the higher power, and so on. I love that the Fray uses these concepts through out their music. We all have addictions and we all need the truth.

  I just watched the video to this song and by the way, I love the Fray. In the very end of the song it shows the girl (whom I would assume is his girlfriend) turn and look up as if she isn't dead but was maybe unconcious or something and IT DOES not show him commit suicide.   It's just a song, if you want to know the meaning behind it then look up the interview about it on youtube, I remember the lead singer say that the song was about hard times that people close to him went through and him wondering why God wasn't there for them. It's a beautiful and inspiring song, obviously it has inspired a lot of diverse opinions in people and everyone can hear it and interupt it in the way that they choose to.

  This song is not about God, which seems to be a common misconception. Just because the phrase "I found God" doesn't depict his actual finding God. It's an allusion. God is the etheral, almighty being, the savior for everyone that needs it. That's that the narrator is targeting - the saviour aspect. He treats this person as God, as the knight in shining armour, and then his anguished questions "Where were you?" suggest that this person has abandoned hin in his time of need. Although it could seem as though he talks of God, I don't think he does. God smoking a cigarette on the corner of First and Amistad is highly improbable.
  
  
  Later, in the second verse, he mentions "No way to know how long she will be next to me". This implies that this person is someone with whom he was in a relationship with of some kind. This makes sense when tied with when the narrator mentions waiting for phone calls. God doesn't make phone calls. Humans do. Waiting for a phone call is a ditch that cannot be avoided in many relationships. Waiting for "years and years" may be an exaggeration to communicate his pain of being left alone. He needs this person and this person has hardly understood what he/she may have put the narrator through in his/her absence. He has waited for this person for so long and that person never bothered to reciprocate. Unexpectedly, they meet on the corner of First and Amistad - who knew? And that person is very much casual as suggested by the smoking and laconic way he/she said "Ask anything." This was the cue for disappointment, sadness and whatever other bittersweet emotions to be made understood for this person.
  
  I don't believe that these are the woes of someone forgotten by God, because the lyrics don't quite fit to what he might feel IF he were neglected by God.

Obviously the whole song is about how if his timing had only been a little different, maybe he could have saved her or things would have been different.
