The Fray - How To Save A Life Lyrics

Artist: The Fray

Album: How To Save A Life

  • Songwriters: Joseph King, Isaac Slade

Step one, you say, "We need to talk"
He walks, you say, "Sit down, it's just a talk"
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through

Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
You begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Let him know that you know best
'Cause after all, you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
Without granting innocence

Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you've told him all along
And pray to God he hears you
And pray to God he hears you

And where did I go wrong? I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you've followed

He will do one of two things
He will admit to everything
Or he'll say he's just not the same
And you'll begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

How to save a life
How to save a life

Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

How to save a life
How to save a life

The title track, "How To Save A Life," was inspired by Slade's experience as a mentor to a crack addicted teen. "I was a sheltered suburban kid when I met this guy. He was a recovering addict, coming out of a really tough teenage life. Thankfully, he was on his way out of that life, so he was able to really look back with some objectivity. The song is more of a memoir about his slow motion descent and all the relationships he lost along the way." Destined to be one of the band's greatest hits, Slade isn't worried about getting tired of performing the song: "It is the easiest one for me to sing every night. I constantly get emails from people who relate to it."

Thats the real story behind the song. From the artists mouths.

this is about a personal experience for the fray. they went to a camp for troubled teens and tried to talk one out of committing suicide, but the boy did it anyway and this is what the fray wishe they would've done.

The song is sung by the third party (guy) who wants to help the girl with her troubled relationship with her boyfriend. The singer really cared for the girl and would have done anything for her, but he believes she'll take the cheating boyfriend back.

The Fray wrote the song about when one of the members went to a camp for troubled teens and was trying to help one of the kids but he didn't know how.

its about a girl trying to save her relationship with a man who is running with the wrong crowd (break with the ones you follow), drugs perhaps are involved??? (trying to save his life) which is why the lyric of bitterness and 'wondering why she came' as well as 'not granting him innocence.' I would have stayed up with you all night is a reference to helping thru the withdrawal from the drug

For me this song is about couple who started well together and went off track in the end. the guy in the song did a lot of wrongs and the first person is the girl asking the guy if he will still continue what his doing and lose their relationship or not.

-Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you've followed-

Saving a life not in literal terms but their life together. it can also be about the parent asking his son to stop his destructive ways, either drugs or bad things... she doesn't know how to save his life means she doesn't know what to do anymore. Nobody got killed in the song at least literally. but people can die without going to the grave.

at least this is how i see the song...

when i listen again maybe its about how bad decisions we make in life and in the end we need someone to blame for our own mistakes.
