  Brilliant as Temper Trap's song is, hearing it always makes me think of Martin who sang it on Autistic Superstars. Martin is severely autistic but seems free of all that, appears to lose all his anxieties and behaviours when he's singing this beautiful song which he quite obviously loves to do.   I'm going with the former; it seems to have a theme of comparing/contrasting and 'a dream aloud/allowed' doesn't fit the rest of the lyric, in my humble opinion.

  if my life had a soundtrack this would be one of the songs on it. Its kinda like the song that I came out to my parents with realising that I would never be happy one way or the other I just had to do it. Its like memories of highschool almost getting caught smoking at the back of the boys toilets and running like hell while holding onto your bestfriends hand tightly or that time you make eye contact with someone and you realise the one your with isnt the one you were meant to be with all along. but most of all its the way the song begins that its like your whole world is tearing apart before your very eyes and you think "Fuck this"and you leap into it with all that you have accepting everything just to be true to the one person that matters the most and thats you. you only live once so be adventurous every now and then
