Skillet - Lucy Lyrics

Artist: Skillet

Album: Awake

  • Songwriters: John Landrum Cooper

Hey Lucy, I remember your name
I left a dozen roses on your grave today
I'm in the grass on my knees, wipe the leaves away
I just came to talk for a while, got some things I need to say

Now that it's over, I just wanna hold her
I'd give up all the world to see
That little piece of Heaven looking back at me

Now that it's over, I just wanna hold her
I've gotta live with the choices I made
And I can't live with myself today

Hey Lucy, I remembered your birthday
They said it'd bring some closure to say your name
I know I'd do it all different if I had the chance
But all I got are these roses to give
And they can't help me make amends

Now that it's over, I just wanna hold her
I'd give up all the world to see
That little piece of Heaven looking back at me

Now that it's over, I just wanna hold her
I've gotta live with the choices I made
And I can't live with myself today

Here we are, now you're in my arms
I never wanted anything so bad
Here we are for a brand new start
Living the life that we could've had

Me and Lucy walking hand in hand
Me and Lucy never wanna end
Just another moment in your eyes
I'll see you in another life in Heaven
Where we never say goodbye

Now that it's over, I just wanna hold her
I'd give up all the world to see
That little piece of Heaven looking back at me

Now that it's over, I just wanna hold her
I've gotta live with the choices I made
And I can't live with myself today

Here we are, now you're in my arms
Here we are for a brand new start
I got to live with the choices I've made
And I can't live with myself today

Me and Lucy walking hand in hand
Me and Lucy never wanna end
I've got to live with the choices I've made
And I can't live with myself today

Hey Lucy, I remember your name

Actually, this song is about him. When he and his girlfriend were teenagers they decided to have an abortion. Afterwards they were really upset about their decision. They went to counseling and they were told to name her and have a gravesite for her. They were told that would help them grieve better. Later on he married his girlfriend.

It's not about anyone in specific. Go onto wikianswers and look at the answer to the exact same question you guys are all trying to answer. John Cooper himself answered the question. Use your resources guys!

In fact, I'll make this easy on you.

I think that Lucy was his girl friend and they got in a fight. Lucy left the place where they fraught and she got in a deadly car crash, and so he feels bad because he never got to say that he was sorry.

When i was younger.. i made a large mistake, from that mistake, came a baby boy, Ryeleigh, Ryeleigh is now passed away and in heaven..
with my father who commited suicide, this song brings me comfort when im stuck wondering what my baby boy would have been like now.. he will be 2 this year.

ok. I think that john had a girlfriend and didn;t treat her like he should have and then she died. then john realized that he had done so many wrong things to her and he wants to make it up to her, but it's too late now. So he's thinking that when he gets to heaven, when he sees Lucy, he'll apologize and treat her the way he should have done on earth.
and i admit that the song is really depressing.

I don't think it's about an abortion/still birth at all. I think it's about death of either his girlfriend or his daughter because it seems he would have had to have known and loved this person a very large amount to speak of them in such a way.
This song sends shivers down my spine every time.

I dont care what they wrote it about, the first time I heard this song I cried for my unborn baby. i dont have a name/sex/birthday or grave to mourn at but this song resonates. I thank God for his grace and for new beginnings

Compared to all the other songs by this group this one is depressing. To me it seems that Lucy (his girlfriend) was killed in a drunk-driving accident.
If it was about abortion it would be sung by a woman.

I think it is about a guy who fell in love with girl broke up with her, and then she died... :( super sad... ik..

It could be that he had a daughter then left his family and wasn't ever really a father to her. After she dies, he comes to her grave and the song is about the regret he feels...

all John said to us during the Q&A at the Medford show back in october, the real meaning is a secret and we should relate it in our own ways. I HIGHLY doubt its about abortion - Period. Not sure when all you people get THAT idea, so get it outa your heads k?

Supposedly john didn't actually have a true meaning for this song, he wanted people to relate to it in their own ways. I think this is a very sad but great song.

I think its about a guy breakin up with a girl for her to die then he realizes how much he loves her

  • Anonymous

i think it's about a girl who died and he's talking about her, especially when he's singing about the life they could have had and how now he's got to live with and make his own choices.

Well, an unborn baby may not have a BIRTHDAY, but he/she has a due date and a deathday. The due date may be what he is reffering to if this song is indeed about an abortion. Also, it depends on the type of abortion the parents choose as to whether or not the baby has a grave. You can get an abortion that just leaves you with a dead baby, and they may have chosen to bury the baby's body.

This song is about an abortion, but I wonder if it relates to Johns life at all.........
