I never appreciated the pathos this song exudes until I watched the movie The Watchmen, and it hit me like an epiphany. Incredible song , powerful message, I like the comments on the song's meaning by Anonymous above. Even more appropriate in this day of twitter/text/email, no face to face communication. So much is lost. But good things can come of the technology too, so let's not all go jump off a bridge!

When I listen to this song, I see in my head he's walking down a city street at night. Every light is on, and there are large crowds of people everywhere. He sees everyone talking. Their lips are moving, but no sound is coming out. They've grown so used to having technology do the speaking for them that they've forgotten how to communicate with real people. Technology could be the "neon god" the people have made. He tries to get the people to unplug everything, to speak like they used to do, but he cannot. (Fools, said I you do not know/silence like a cancer grows/take my arms that I might reach you/hear my words that I might teach you/but my words like silent raindrops fell/and echoed in the wells of silence.)

This is about how people can become so immersed in technology and other shiny new gadgets, that they don't notice what's going on around them.
