News anchors and journalists have been known to slide song lyrics into their newscasts, because why not?

Like when two news anchors celebrated Tupac‘s birthday by lacing lyrics throughout their broadcast. Or when one of those same anchors included Notorious B.I.G. lyrics into his broadcast.

But hip-hop ain’t the only sly game in town. Like many examples we probably have yet to catch those cheeky newspeople on, two other journos with a penchant for jam bands have followed suit, this time with the band Phish.

Politico’s Jake Sherman and MSNBC’s Katy Tur were on MSNBC Monday covering the protests at the United States Senate regarding the healthcare legislation. Sherman, ever so smoothly, dropped lyrics from Phish’s “Mike’s Song” into his reporting.

“It seems like they’re trapped in time and don’t know what to do when it comes to this legislation,” Sherman said, pulling words from the first verse of the song:

Trapped in time and I don’t know what to do
These friends of mine, I can see right through
You don’t gotta tell me I don’t gotta move
‘Cuz I’m sittin’ back here sharin’ in the groove

In response, Tur referenced Phish’ “Tube,” saying the protesters were “feeling like it’s not so stupendous living in that tube.” This was citing the outtro of the song, which actually says, “So stupendous, living in this tube.”

Tur and Sherman have shared Phish lyrics on the air three times total, according to Jambase. In one of those other cases, Tur introduced her guest Sherman as “My friend, my friend,” giving a nod to Phish’s song of the same name. Smiling, Sherman responded with, “It’s kind of dizzying. I’m having a tough time … I’m bouncing around the room a little bit,” hearkening their song “Bouncing Around the Room.”

The other time they used Phish lyrics, Tur managed to say, “It’s certainly not a picture of nectar for this White House,” reminding fans of the band’s album A Picture of Nectar.

Truly, this is journalism at its finest. And all this time we thought Phish weren’t even capable of writing lyrics.
