What are you doing this September 24th?  A few notable things will be taking place on this date and it’s our job at SongLyrics to make you aware of just a few of them.

September 24th, 2011 will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the release of Nirvana‘s breakthrough album, Nevermind. This second album from the alternative Seattle grunge rockers contained such ever-popular songs as “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (#9 on Rolling Stone‘s list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time”), “Lithium“, and  “In Bloom“, among others.  In honor of the anniversary, surviving members of the band, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic (lead singer of the Nirvana trio, Kurt Cobain, committed suicide in 1994), will participate in a “Nirvana Town Hall” Q&A on Sirius XM Radio.  Also joining the duo will be Butch Vig, who produced the album.

And in an exciting bit of news, the event will be hosted by none other than America’s Most Trusted Newsman, Jon Stewart. Dave Grohl appeared on Stewart’s The Daily Show early this year while promoting the album Wasting Light for his band, the Foo Fighters.  The two had a great and easy-going rapport which will certainly translate to the upcoming “Town Hall” in September.

Foo Fighters on The Daily Show

The Q&A will be broadcast live at 8 p.m, EST on Sirius XM Radio Channel 34.  Channel 34 is the radio network’s ’90s Alternative/Grunge station, which is fittingly named, “Lithium”.  Nicely played, Sirius.

September 24th is the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, where Radiohead will be performing as the show’s musical guest. This will be the band’s second appearance on the late-night sketch show, following a booking in 2000 in support of their album, Kid A. In February of this year, Radiohead released the their most recent album, The King of Limbs. Though it has been seven months since this polarizing work hit the markets, Radiohead has not done any live performances to promote Limbs in the U.S.  And now the promise of Radiohead being in NY for the taping of SNL has fans and critics alike chomping at the bit for news of other possible scheduled performances. Please, oh please make this happen. Either way, this is a smart musical booking on SNL’s behalf; with comic gold “30 Rock” star Alec Bladwin hosting—for his 16th time, no less! Seriously, stop making everyone else look bad, Alec—it should be a solid show.  Plan your evening accordingly.  Or, you know, set your DVRs.

Need something to wet your appetite until the 24th?  In July, the band performed The King of Limbs in its entirety for the a broadcast originally aired on the BBC called, “Radiohead – The King of Limbs: Live From the Basement”. Check it out below:

Attention history buffs!  The date also marks the 222nd year anniversary of Congress’s passing of the Judiciary Act, thus establishing the federal judiciary system we know (and love? are frustrated with? want to punch in the face?) today. Some of you may want to commemorate the day by breaking out your gavels and debating Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission until the cows come home.
