Though we could call it a day with the blurred noir poetics of Neko Case‘s new acerbic piece of punk-country genius, “Night Still Comes,” ‘puking up sonnets’ and all, some hefty pop stars and their marketing entourages have gone to great lengths to capture the heart of America’s youth in lyrically clever ways, even going so far as to create a fictitious social network. While a new Avett Brothers jam brings the 33rd week in the year’s best lyric vids all back home nice and simply sweet.

Neko Case – ‘Night Still Comes

When the subtext rolls across the screen like a noir film credit, Neko confiding her “brain makes drugs to keep [her] slow,” it’s over, you’re already part of her seductive, howling punk-country dreamscape. Bokeh being the played out camera trick it is doesn’t apply here, working seamlessly with nighttime ruminations amidst a concrete jungle:

Catch, catch, catch, catch a falling star
But wash your hands of it
Catch, catch, catch, catch a falling star
Because you can’t own it
You never held it at the right angle

Lady Gaga – ‘Applause

A pop music emergency,” from the bloated ego of the fading manipulator of earworm knobbery as she tricks the lifeblood of her success, lemmings – ahem, ‘monsters‘ – of the “the adrenaline of fame,” with one last tired mask – a Bowie-meets-Cher cocaine-synth of a notion that she’s actually relevant, complete with self-shot footage of one of her many vain nights out on the monster town. In this case, a space with a disproportionate amount of drag queens:

Pop culture was in art, now art’s in pop culture in me!

Avril Lavigne – ‘Rock N Roll

Lavigne invents her own fictitious social network to one-two punch the Gaga and Perry with this week’s assault of new super pop jams, and though we want to give up on humanity after witnessing some of these verses, ‘Avrilgram’ is a pretty sweet homage to all her fans that contributed to make the clever idea happen:

Don’t care about a reputation (rock on)
Must be living in the wrong generation
This is your invitation
Let’s get wasted

Katy Perry – ‘Roar

Teenage dreamer with her skin-tight jeans wants you to hear her “Roar,” in emoticons, as her new ‘pop rocks’-coated anthem rips off all SurvivorQueen, and Muhammad Ali in sentiment. Otherwise, if you like saying things with your thumbs and emulating lions, this is your jam, grrrrl in need of a self-esteem boost:

I’ve got the eye of the tiger, the fire
Dancing through the fire
Because I am the champion
And you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion

The Avett Brothers – ‘Another is Waiting

A taste of the first sentiments from the new Avett Bros disc, Magpie and the Dandelionthe Carolina achy-heart barnburners keep it simple, silly – that spells ‘KISS’, you see – to carry on their usual conversations of shaking the good out of hearts and such, while an animated bird is just about the biggest piece of eye candy you’re going to get here. Which is a good thing, if you dig lyrics in the raw:

It’s a fake, it’s a con
The nature of the road you’re on
Let me see your skeleton
Well before your life is done
