Cut immediately following the Tucson, Arizona massacre that killed six, wounded 13, including U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, the eponymous second single from Dierks Bentley‘s eighth effort, Home, prod’s the country star’s native Amurrica pride and the darkness that sometimes shrouds “from the mountains high to the wave-crashed coast.” Notching in at the four-minute mark, “Home” handles arena themes complete with Edge-wavering guitar builds and overdubbed choirs without burying itself in overwrought star-spangled sentiments. Part of that succinctness Bentley owes to fellow collaborating songwriters Brett Beavers and Dan Wilson, and producer Jon Randall for balancing acoustic twang in precise amounts. But Bentley’s plainspoken sincerity remains the glistening catharsis on this spread-armed ballad, painting verses red with “scars,” “blood” and “worry” without losing “sight of who we are.”
