Riff: Young Thug – “MLK”

Jan 16, 2018

I was havin’ a dream/I was whippin’ a Rolls Royce/And I bought everything that I want/Turned to Martin Luther King overnight

from MLK lyrics by Young Thug

In honor of MLK Day, Young Thug recounts his rough upbringing and how hard he had to work to achieve fame and fortune. He was just like every other lost soul out there, floundering for meaning and purpose. Once he had a kid it all came into sharp focus and he knew that he needed to escape poverty and achieve the highest level of success. The MLK reference is flimsy at best, nothing more than him having a dream about being rich. The beat is about as tame as you’re going to get considering the source, and while it’s meant to inspire and stir up feelings of contemplation and brotherhood it falls painfully short with its lack of refinement. Another embarrassing whiff.
