Riff: U2 – “Cedarwood Road”

Sep 16, 2014

Sleepwalking down the road/Not waking from these dreams/‘Cause it’s never dead it’s still my head/It was a warzone in my teens

from Cedarwood Road lyrics by U2

For some reason, no amount of real-life political violence experienced as a teenager can make Bono actually sound like a grizzled street kid veteran (shockingly), but the blues riffs and heavy drums here don’t sound as stale as expected. Sure, it’s all just production tricks, but whatever.

Riff by Karl Ernest

Karl is a Seattle-based musician and writer at SONGLYRICS; a veteran of both east and west-coast scenes, he has performed with the likes of The Ying Yang Twins, David Arquette, Wynton Marsalis, among others. But he's no stranger to seedy dives or house shows, either.

What is a RIFF?
