Ask me/Play for me/That song that you wrote/Hysterically loud/And cry for me/’Cause I figured it out/I figured you out
The third single from the New Jersey punk trio’s LP7, All At Once, takes a queue from bassist King Mike, who originally demoed the song amongst the group. Singer and lead guitarist Marissa Patemoster then took some creative liberties — reducing her usual Siouxsie and the Banshees‘ howl to a yearn-and-burn pine, while the likewise usual thunder-scrap thrash the band usually turns out nestles into a slow dirge of a keys number. Rife with a constant image of its protagonist ‘falling’ perpetually into an emotional downward spiral, there’s a pseudo awakening in the chorus about ‘figuring out’ the song’s protagonist, but like every disillusioned relationship ever, the pain remains. The melody, though, is all warm blanket balladry there to comfort your way out of the darkness.
