Riff: Pearl Jam – “Future Days”

Oct 15, 2013

All the promises at sundown, I met them like the rest/Demons dancing used to come round I’m greatful now they’ve left/So persistent in my ways, Angel I am here to stay

from Future Days lyrics by Pearl Jam

One of the last crusaders of relevant arena rock, blessed with more highs than lows than the average man PJ may be. And this is a beautiful piano-lulled orch-pop serenade to the one true blue thing that man can’t buy. Why PJ are PJ. But this is not PJ. This is “Come Back” gone “Dad Rock” soft.

  • I DONT THINK PJ GIVES A CRAP

OH BOY, U DID IT! PATTING YOUR BACK FOR DESIPHIRING AND DISECTING VETTERS MEANINGS. YA, WE KNOW SOME IS POLITICAL BUT WHY PUT YOUR DUESCHE STAMP ON SOMETHING THAT TRANSCENDS YOUR APPRECIATION. OH BECAUSE ITS YOUR JOB. WAY TO BE A CUTTING EDGE CRITIC THAT DOESNT REACH EVEN SOME OF THE MASSES AND WHEN HE DOES JUST MAKES AN OBVIOUS “I’M BEYOND THIS” KIND OF CRITIQUE. THEIR TRUTH FOR MUSIC AND HONESTY BELITTLES WHAT EVER TWO BIT SMUG STAND YOU PUT ON IT. JUST AND FYI, DUDE.

My friend who goes by “I Don’t Think PJ Gives a Crap,” thank you for your comment. Though I believe you may have missed the point of my “DUESCHE STAMP” [sic]. Never at any point did I want to imply that “I”M BEYOND THIS.” Perhaps it may transcend my appreciation, I’ll give you that, if that’s what you think this is about. But as a lifelong PJ fan, merely was I seeing a backseat in songwriting, and disheartened by how soft and one-dimensional this song was/is. For a record called Lightning Bolt, and a band who’s got two decades, at least, of quality songwriting left in ‘em, I yearned for more than a ballad coda called “Future Days” that feels like phoned-in sentimental wailing, strung along cliche weather imagery and a relationship that never felt earned to me, the way of emotional involvement. They’re better than this, man. We all know Vedder knows how to pen a ballad. This didn’t do it for me.
