Riff: Leon Bridges – “Bad Bad News”

Mar 14, 2018

I’m just trynna move up front/A lil more of this, a lil less of that, yeah/They tell me I was born to lose/But I made a good good thing out of bad bad news

from Bad Bad News lyrics by Leon Bridges

Dealt a bad hand, but like a true warrior he moves forward and finds the silver lining. The groove is heavy, steeped in house-like rhythms and melodies. The Grant Green-like lick that floats over the top adds an acoustic touch that makes it a haven for Bridges, and he shines in such a way that shows notable growth and maturity. There is a Raphael Saadiq-like quality to his writing that proves that you can say a lot with a few words, so long as the emotion is pure. Adversity has been nipping at his heels since birth, and it’s kept him light on his feet; moving towards greatness with urgency and speed. Despite the challenges, he sounds as cool as ever, unfazed by the naysayers and haters.
