Riff: Kali Uchis – “After the Storm”

Jan 18, 2018

The sun’ll come out/Nothing good ever comes easy/I know times are rough/But winners don’t quit

from After the Storm lyrics by Kali Uchis

Sweet words of encouragement from a budding superstar. The advice is simple: keep trying. Even if life gets tough, you have to continue to pursue your dreams. What makes it such a potent piece of advice is the delivery, a sweet gesture full of fragrant melodies and flirtatious gestures. Tyler, the Creator adds a touch of grit, but the message is still the same. He’s hoping that she’ll be there for him when he loses hope, and by the sounds of it she’s more than happy to serve as his rock. Bootsy also makes an appearance and while his cameo is brief his style can be felt all throughout; the slow buttery groove and lithe vocal touches take it to a whole other galaxy. Funk, soul and hip-hop melding into an ocean of positive vibes.
