Riff: Big K.R.I.T. – “Ready for the Next”

Nov 21, 2017

How we gon’ pay these bills? (bills?)/I want my family straight (straight)/Gotta give more than most (most)/I gotta be more than great (great)

from Ready for the Next lyrics by Big K.R.I.T.

With little in the way of opportunity, Big K.R.I.T. knows the meaning of struggle. Most rappers equate adversity to vainglorious endeavors like which color Jordans to wear, but K.R.I.T. was at a point where he had to worry about where his next meal was coming from. There’s no sugarcoating the challenges he faced, and since he came from such dire circumstances he knew he had to work that much harder to not only escape poverty but to accomplish his goals. It’s the lead single to the documentary 89 Blocks, a film about the positive impact football has had in East St. Louis, Illinois; one of the most impoverished communities in the U.S. Motivation and the wherewithal to execute a plan are key ingredients, and Big K.R.I.T. is encouraging the youth to act and take their destinies into their own hands.
