Riff: Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite – “Blood Side Out”

Jan 30, 2013

Got a wine-soaked heart and whisky-soaked lips/The country may be in your bones, but the city’s in your hips

from Blood Side Out lyrics by Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite

Harper kills this burning blues shuffle. In the role of a man who can’t get his woman, but knows how to debauchedly “get his kicks,” Harper puts on a clinic; he’s got a falsetto croon, buckets of soul and karate-chop rhythms in this double-time-RATM/down-tuned rocker (also the album’s best track).

Riff by Karl Ernest

Karl is a Seattle-based musician and writer at SONGLYRICS; a veteran of both east and west-coast scenes, he has performed with the likes of The Ying Yang Twins, David Arquette, Wynton Marsalis, among others. But he's no stranger to seedy dives or house shows, either.
