Psy_EDIT

Twas around this time last year we hoped Psy‘s “Gangnam Style” would have imploded upon its gluttonous viral self after hitting the billion milestone YouTube view mark, never to be heard again. Luckily the Internet Age attention span kind of slowly adjusted on its own, once digital gremlins stopped finding new ways to mash the South Korean’s lavishly annoying song about some rich ‘hood that spawned him with everything from the Ghostbusters to fellow viral earworms like Carly Rae Jepson‘s “Call Me Maybe,” however you want to title that.

Until, that is, in the last hours of 2013, an anime nerd, RosalinaSama and a mashup nerd, Triple-Q, blew up Reddit out of absolutely nowhere with the convergence of Linkin Park‘s 2000 rap metal bro thrash centerpiece, Hybrid Theory, with “Gangnam Style,” in its entirety, rebranded as Psybrid Theory. Just “Gangnam Style.” We thought it would be like dousing cheap champagne in spoiled milk, too. But it’s meticulously put together, guys, repurposing Psy’s “sexy lady” attempts at pop poetry into a kind of sad drama of the modern Far East night, substance abuse tones of “Crawling” frankenstein-ing into an eery commentary on just how shallow and cheap the ‘gangnam style’ life really is, dubbed, “Crawling in My Style.” It’s no Grey Album. But, so goes another lesson in viral psychology:

Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Now let’s go until the end
