As of today, every member of One Direction has released solo music — Liam Payne dropped his debut single, “Strip That Down” this morning. Although, as one line of the song suggests, maybe 1D is done for good.

You know I used to be in 1D, now I’m out free

People want me for one thing, that’s not me

These are the lines most 1D fans are focusing on, but shouldn’t they be talking about how little thought it seems the songwriter put into the lyrics? Right from the outset, cliches fall like bombs, including phrases like “eyes upon the prize,” “cards that I’ve been dealt,” and mentions of walking into a party and driving sports cars.

But the chorus is the epitome of superficiality:

You know I love it when the music’s loud

but, c’mon, strip that down for me, baby

now there’s a lot of people in the crowd

but only you can dance with me

So put your hands on my body and swing that round for me, baby

You know I love it when the music’s loud

but, c’mon, strip that down for me

This is surprising coming from a new dad — typically big life changes like that alter a songwriter’s approach and they end up writing more meaningful lyrics.

Payne debuted this single on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw this morning where he said his girlfriend and his son’s mother, Cheryl, was the first to hear the song.

“It is just the beginning,” Cheryl said on Twitter. “Hope you’re all enjoying ‘Strip That Down’. So proud of you babe.”

Hopefully, the rest of the tunes on this album will be less manufactured pop and more fought-for artistry.

“I’ve been working hard in the studio for over a year and I’m really excited to share this new music with my amazing fans,” he said on the radio show. “I’ve come a long way since our One Direction debut and I hope everyone likes my new sound as much as I do. 2017 has been a big year for me already and I’m looking forward to what the rest of it will bring.”
