Just 20 on this day back in 2002, Kelly Clarkson‘s American Idol crowning could have been just another piece to put on the fading mantle of reality TV, in full ratings bloom at the time. But the Texas-upstart, who had turned down two record contracts from Jive and Interscope in the late 90s, she flipped an ace on us all two years later with a little nugget of threatening pop geniusry, “Since U Been Gone.”

Here is a song even earmarked by Pitchfork as one of the greatest of its time. This is sugar in the raw, still muddled with bits of dirt, Clarkson howling over a grungy guitar jangle how bad she’s got the world by the short and curlies and not the other way around. And it’s just damn fun to sing along to:

But Since U Been Gone
I can breathe for the first time
I’m so moving on
Yeah, yeah
Thanks to you
Now I get
What I want
Since U Been Gone
