Kicking off its 58-episode run, The Johnny Cash Show taped its first performances on this day in 1969, featuring Joni Mitchell, Doug Kershaw and Bob Dylan, the latter of which joining the “Man in Black” on a duet of “Girl From the North Country.”
There was nothing revelatory about the moment really, as the two fiddled around with the song together back in February of the same year for serendipitous use on Nashville Skyline. And Dylan had been working it into his sets since its original wispy debut on The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.
But to see the two smiling ear-to-ear, sharing harmony on a tale about the veritable ‘one’ that is no longer the veritable ‘one’ was transcendental — a testament to how ahead of the curve they were before all the dreams incubated during the Summer of Love would soon be broken come the new decade:
Well, if you’re travelin’ in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine
