Pop rapper Lil Yachty recently jumped on Twitter to make some bold claims about his skills on the mic. It all began when Miami rapper Smokepurpp tweeted that Lil Yachty was “underrated” and that “people overlook him.” In an interview with XXL he lauded Yachty as a lyrical savant.

“He just freestyled that shit. Like 10 minutes, he was done with that shit,” Smokepurpp said of Yachty’s verse on “Do Not Disturb.” “I was like, I’m not gon’ lie, his recording process, that shit is fire because he literally goes in a freestyle and it’s like nothing to him. People don’t give Yachty the credit that he deserves. He actually snaps. He actually says shit, he be coming with the metaphors and niggas don’t give him credit for that. In my opinion, he’s a good rapper — one of the best rappers out right now.”

Lil Yacthy responded to Smokepurpp’s tweet, and said that he was better than over half the new rappers in the game.

“Real underdog bruh,” Lil Yachty tweeted. “I can prolly out rap 75% of the new generation but niggas sleep on me. Plus i ain’t got nothing to prove brother.”

As things normally unfold in the social mediaverse, the reactions were swift ranging from support and confusion to full on hate. Lil Yachty did go on to clarify his statements, explaining that he’s not looking to be the next Nas. “I never said i was a lyricist boi,” he tweeted in response to a critic. “i ain’t tryna be..but i can rap. i can stick wit folks ona track I’m not xan rapper. but I ain’t tryna be no lyricist, but I know I ain’t no mumbling bablin ass nigga.”

Lil Uzi Vert supported Lil Yachty claiming that it’s all “Facts.” Smokepurpp, Lil Yachty and Lil Uzi Vert’s claims are strictly a matter of opinion. None of the three are what we would call scholars of the game, so their statements don’t come as a surprise.

The Breakfast Club Host Charlamagne once called Lil Yachty the “poster child for wack rappers,” and many agreed. But Lil Yachty probably does truly believe he’s a dope lyricist and why would he think otherwise?

Rapper’s are supposed to have bravado, and while Lil Yachty’s statements may be laughable it might actually say more about the mainstream and the tidal wave of mediocre rappers out there than it does about Lil Yachty’s skewed self-perception.
