As My Morning Jacket‘s jovial cosmic rocker Jim James readies his first solo record, Regions of Light and Sound of God (February 5), he took a hot-minute to sling some quips on reddit’s infamous AMA pedestal, peeling back a bit of the mystery surrounding his primary influence for the album, a wordless 1929 novel called Gods’ Man by Lynd Ward, laced with a plethora of beardo quips about everything from Monsters of Folk supergroup (James, Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis, M. Ward) updates to hypothetical day jobs if this whole music thing failed. But before we corral our favorite bits of the AMA, two things: 1.) go get your First Listen on of the highly anticipated album over at NPR before it drops, and 2.), pay special attention to single “A New Life,” and its At Dawn hymnal-cum-soul-glo magic, as it’s equally symbolic of the spiritual shift happening in the artist’s lyrical future – a perfect example of less is more: [LISTEN]

Hey, open the door

I want a new life

Hey, and here’s what’s more

I want a new life, a new life

Babe, let’s get one thing clear

There’s much more star dust when you’re near

I think I’m being sincere

I want a new life, with you
