Doing a biopic of Janis Joplin would have to be a real chore. There is three choices, find and actress who can physically portray her and get the raspy whiskey voice, dialogue, and charisma of all that was Janis Joplin and then dub the singing part. Without a doubt Renee Zellweger could pull that off with Oscar caliber. Second find someone who could actually pull off a semblance of Joplin's vocals and do the singing would give credence to an original soundtrack for the movie. Now Amy Adams can sing, but she doesn't have that strong bluesy edge to pull it off. That leaves someone who can sort of act and sort of sing as the third option. I don't have much of an opinion about Nina Arianda because all I have seen her do is comedy. So I can not think she has the acting diversity of Zellweger who can change shape and appearance like a chameleon and fit into roles like a glove. If only she could sing.
I have to believe that somewhere out there that there is still some talented singer that has emulated Janis Joplin's sound and style without the behavior and with that kind of devotion, it would not be to difficult to mold into an actress enough to do the film.
My first choice is always to have an original movie soundtrack, but failing that, having the acting being the priority and dubbing original recordings (live ones are better, I hate when they use a studio recording and dub the audience).
