Funkmaster Flex is one of the most boisterous voices in rap (the underground version of DJ Khaled), and when he speaks the hip-hop world listens. His scathing opinions have been the stuff of legend, and now he’s taking aim at one of the biggest rap superstars in the game Cardi B.

In an Instagram Live post, Funk Flex ranted about how Cardi B doesn’t write her own lyrics. “Cardi’s consistently getting somebody else to write her shit,” said Funkmaster Flex. “You know I was going to fucking go there. I can’t stand rappers that don’t write their own shit.”

Rumors of Cardi B using a ghostwriter have been circulating for some time. Despite the allegations, Invasion of Privacy has still been lauded by fans and critics alike. The success, however, didn’t stop Flex from going in hard.

“What did we learn today boys and girls? Write your own shit,” Flex continued. “When shit gets funny don’t go on Instagram and turn your comments off and fire your management as soon as you get to the right place. I’m just keeping it a buck. This is my opinion.”

Cardi B hasn’t done much to squash the accusations either. During her album release party, she openly admitted to using a ghostwriter for “Be Careful,” and to her credit didn’t shy away from acknowledging the help.

“I heard the record and was like motherfucker I want the record for me,” Cardi said about “Be Careful.” “I flipped it and made it into a girl version. I don’t give a fuck ghostwriter, co-writer. Bitch, I don’t give a fuck. What you need to do is ask your favorite rappers about their ghostwriters.”

Both Funkmaster Flex and Cardi B have a point. Ghostwriting is rampant especially among mainstream rappers, and fans shouldn’t be surprised that they’re being used so regularly. In the end, however, the pretenders will be exposed through their inability to establish longevity. It’s why there are so many forgettable one-and-dones.
