Never a dull moment when lyric and visual art collide. We’ve seen some ambitious creations from time to time, from Jay Shells’ street sign rap quote project to a pair of Nebraska brothers’ daily Instagram challenge. Now the universe provides us with a nature-science addition.

Inspired by her grandfather’s encyclopedias, and a challenge from a fellow artist named Ella Luna and her 100 Day ProjectKatrina McHugh created a beautiful series of prints combing natural science illustrations and popular song lyrics. For example, she took the famous Bill Withers song “Ain’t No Sunshine” and created a graphic where the amount of sun is measured by a woman’s presence. It’s simple, clean and a clever way to embrace iconic lyrics.

Another clever one is a graphic with the title Things That Know How I Feel. Above the text are the lyrics: a bird in the sky, a sun in the sky and breeze drifting by. A nod to the classic Nina Simone song.

The project 100 Days of Natural Sciences has been a pleasant creative escape from McHugh’s work as a designer. She plans on continuing her project, letting it involve on its own accord. For now, you can buy the limited edition prints at her studio Flight Design Co.
