I don't know if Maxwell wrote this song, but the lyrics really touch me, and I love the song. I read where someone mentioned "This woman's work" - that is a remake - that isn't Maxwell's song - but it is also one with beautiful lyrics that touch me.

this song is beautiful. It makes me think of my ex and i when we were together we did eachother wrong but in the end we still loved each other and to this day we still love eachother even though we cant be together it just would never work between us when maxwell says " i should have shown you better nights better times better days... i miss you more and more" i identify with it. i feel like maybe if i had have been a better person to my ex we might be together even though its not totally my fault we are not together every time i hear that part i almost want to cry and wish for my ex back... I think this song is saying that the guy is the blame and he is the asshole that perhaps cause her to play on him. However, he finds out that she was the real deal but because of what went down they can not regain the past so the best that she can be for him is pleasent memory and he hopes she feels the same

For me, this song represents my first love and how messy things got in the end. Although we loved each other so much, we hurt each other deeply. Well actually he wrote this song about his wife. She killed herself after she found out that he had cheated on her. If you interpet the lyrics you will notice that the lyrics were meant for his late wife. He was doing the cheatin.

Absolutely love this song. I appreciate the different breakdowns posted of what the song means. I know in the first verse he got hurt and in the second he hurt someone. The lesson we all should take from this, don't hold on to a good person if you can't do them right. Don't cause more heartache than what is necessary. in true understanding of this song...I believe maxwell is speaking in first and third person. The beginning of the song it's first person. He is talking himself all the way to the point where he says "I hope you feel the same way".. There after he says " Oh, you played me dirty, your game was so bad" at this point he is speaking in third person. He is reciting the words the woman said to him it's her pain at that point. Later in the song he states "I came wrong, you were right" this is the first person point of view where he is admitting to his wrongs! and stating how he should have been in the relationship the things he should have done that he didn't do. Then as the adage goes "if you love something enough you let it go and if it returns it was meant to be" thats what he does. Instead of hounding her to stay with him, he is willing to let something he loves so much go and give her the choice. This is a lesson in love. If you listen to "This Woman's Work" you will see it is similar in content. It's a break up. He says "All the things we should have said that were never said, All the things we should have done that were never did, All the things we should have given, but I never did"...The man makes good music!

No he says she won't remember him or the trails of their relationship. The part with "you played me dirty, you played me so bad" sort of throws me but I can only guess that she gave him her all & he feel in love (which most men call game) and he couldn't handle it so he had to set her free. I guess...either way it is a great song about moving on from a relationship that is hurting you.... Lesson learned here!!
