Manchester Orchestra - Shake It Out Lyrics

Artist: Manchester Orchestra

Album: Mean Everything To Nothing

Genre: Rock

  • Songwriters: John Andrew Hull

Shake it out, shake it out
God, I need another round
Another round, another round
Another, I could feel it now
I felt the Lord in my father's house

Then I could see, I could see
Standing, we were seventeen, make it clean
Are you the living ghost of what I need?
Are you giving me the best of me?
We will see

'Cause I'm done being done
With the funerals at least for now
Are you tired of being alone?
Are you tired of being alone?

Shake it out, shake it out
Tired of another round, another
Wasn't really what I wanted so we brought it out
Over the floor at my neighbors house

And I could see, I could see
God, I've never seen a thing, so complete
I am the living ghost of what you need
I am everything eternally, God, just speak

'Cause I'm done being done
With the funerals at least for now
Are you tired of being alone?
Are you tired of being alone?
So speak to me

Oh God, you gotta shake it out, shake it out
You gotta take it out, take it down
I gotta jump around
I needed that more than I ever have

Oh God, you gotta shake it out, shake it out
You gotta break it down, break it out
You gotta jump around
I feel it now more than I ever have

I felt the world begin to peel off all my skin
And I felt the weight within
Reveal the bigger mess that you can't fix

I felt, I felt God lead me into my home
Don't stop, don't ever go
I swear you'll never know, you'll never know

Oh God, you gotta shake it out, shake it out
You gotta break it down, break it out

    its about a drunken fight

I feel as though it has more to do with the fact that he almost feels like he isn't quite good enough inside. The bridge, "I felt the Lord begin...that you can't fix," seems like he found God again, but when he went to him, he felt ashamed by what he had done in the past, and who he was inside. He felt as though nothing could fix him, even God.

i think the song is about how he ordered food at taco bell and they totally f***ed up his order !

i think a lot of people made decent points here.. but i honeslty felt more like the song was talking about over coming an addiction and that feeling of emptiness/loneliness and how he is now trying to find his way back to god. rather then losing touch with god like some suggested. but thats just my take on it.

Yeah, I don't know if this song is about drugs exactly. Drugs may be included, but being raised in a christian environment, just like the lead singer, I can say this song has a lot to do with failed christian rules and beliefs.
Where the song gets slow, the lyrics are "I felt the Lord begin, to peel off all my skin"
This may in fact be a reference to the C.S. Lewis book voyage of the dawn treader, where the character Eustace is turned into a dragon via his greed, and needs to have Aslan peel off his dragon skin, layer by layer. The following lyrics "I felt the weight within, reveal a bigger mess, than you can't fix." ... might be the lead singer's expression that he needs something more than traditional cutesy christian "moralistic" lessons and behavior to fix the mess that prevents him from really connecting with God and others.

Great song, kick-ass band. Sounds to me like its about losing faith in god because he lost someone important and turned to drugs to deal with it..

This band is incredible. Just discovered them the other day. I like the way their music is unpredictable in a predictable age. Keep rockin guys.

this song is without a doubt about questioning his religion, but knowing a god is there. he uses drugs so that he can understand the misery he's going through, being alone. it even says, "so we brought it out on the floor of my neighbor's house." you can't argue it doesn't include drugs, because it obviously does. the song meaning just focuses on the character's faith.
