Lady Gaga - So Happy I Could Die Lyrics

Artist: Lady Gaga

Album: The Fame: Monster

Genre: Pop

  • Songwriters: Nick Dresti, Stefani Germanotta, Nadir Khayat

Eh-eh, eh-eh, yeha, yeha
Eh-eh, eh-eh, aha, aha
Eh-eh, eh-eh, yeha, yeha
Eh-eh, eh-eh, aha, aha

I love that lavender blonde
The way she moves, the way she walks
I touch myself, can't get enough
And in the silence of the night
Through all the tears and all the lies
I touch myself and it's alright

Just give in, don't give up, baby
Open up your heart and your mind to me
Just know when that glass is empty
That the world is gonna bend, yeah

Happy in the club with a bottle of red wine
Stars in our eyes 'cause we're having a good time
Eh-eh, eh-eh, so happy I could die
Be your best friend, yeah, I'll love you forever
Up in the clouds, we'll be higher than ever
Eh-eh, eh-eh, so happy I could die and it's alright

Eh-eh, eh-eh, yeha, yeha
Eh-eh, eh-eh, aha, aha
Eh-eh, eh-eh, yeha, yeha
Eh-eh, eh-eh, aha, aha

I am as vain as I allow
I do my hair, I gloss my eyes
I touch myself all through the night
And when something falls out of place
I take my time, I put it back
I touch myself till I'm on track

Just give in, don't give up, baby
Open up your heart and your mind to me
Just know when that glass is empty
That the world is gonna bend, yeah

Happy in the club with a bottle of red wine
Stars in our eyes 'cause we're having a good time
Eh-eh, eh-eh, so happy I could die
Be your best friend, yeah, I'll love you forever
Up in the clouds, we'll be higher than ever
Eh-eh, eh-eh, so happy I could die and it's alright

So happy I could die and it's alright
So happy I could die and it's alright

Eh-eh, eh-eh, yeha, yeha
Eh-eh, eh-eh, aha, aha
Eh-eh, eh-eh, yeha, yeha
Eh-eh, eh-eh, aha, aha

Happy in the club with a bottle of red wine
Stars in our eyes 'cause we're having a good time
Eh-eh, eh-eh, so happy I could die
Be your best friend, yeah, I'll love you forever
Up in the clouds, we'll be higher than ever
Eh-eh, eh-eh, so happy I could die and it's alright

Happy in the club with a bottle of red wine
Stars in our eyes 'cause we're having a good time
Eh-eh, eh-eh, so happy I could die
Be your best friend, yeah, I'll love you forever
Up in the clouds, we'll be higher than ever
Eh-eh, eh-eh, so happy I could die and it's alright

I think the song is about stefani loving lady gaga & wat she does but sumtimes she drinks 2 get away from it all & when she says "when the glass is empty the world is going to bend" she means tht when she is sober again she goes back 2 reality & back 2 being lady.

  • Ankita Puri

Just to calm everyone's tits...The is a copy-paste from the 'gagapedia' meaning of the song.
Also, in case anyone is curious, when she mentions 'touching herself', shes talking about her makeup and not masturbation, which is hinted at when she mentions vanity, and says things like 'gloss my eyes'. :3
    ----------------------------------------------------
"So Happy I Could Die" represents her "Fear of Addiction Monster", this also includes a fear of alcohol. In an interview, she stated that the song is about our "happy place" that we go to when we're under "the influence", and this fear is split between two songs. The song also makes a reference to her lavender wig.

on July 26, 2009 Lady Gaga tweeted 'Lavender wig is back in full force. I'm so happy I could die'.

Okay so I don't know what Gaga has said about this song, but I do know that "lavender" is a word that is sometimes associated with homosexuals. So when she says she love's that "lavender blonde" I feel like she is talking about a blonde lesbian she sees, and how much this girl turns her on. This is only a small part of the song's ultimate meaning, though. The rest of the song contains more aspects of a party lifestyle this person lives (drinking, drugs). Sometimes she gets sad, and things "fall out of place", but she "touches herself"(indulges more) and that makes her feel "alright." This song is definitely about living with addiction.

Okay...I think I know the answer..(not that it matters what it is about it still has a great vibe and beat to it and is one of my fave Gaga songs)but.. I did a search out of curiosity for the definition of lavender blonde...I found lots of different things some so stupid that there is no way that that was what whomever wrote the song meant...anyway there is an actress named Kim Novak. This was what was said about her..I think maybe The song writer was a fan of Novaks..I don't knopw if Gaga wrote it or not..but either way I think this may just be whom the lavender blonde is thats being refered too. Another thing I noticed was interesting is that in Bad Romance she speaks about wanting ur Vertigo stick..Kim Novak was in a movie called Vertigo as well...Idk but makes me really wanna know the true meaning if there is a hidden deeper meaning to it at all..then again it could be just a simple song about masturbation and alcohol but I think the Kim Novak thing is a unique Idea of what the lyrics mean...

This is a good song doesnt matter what its about :). Honestly People Look at the Bad perspective of it but if you just look at it. its an amazing song to tell you the truth

  • Anonymous

I actually understand her. I Love myself too. I guess to much since people keep telling me.

  • Anonymous

this song is about her being in love with herself when she's lady gaga and not stefani ~ but only when she's drinking alcohol. The lavender blonde is a reference to her 'lavender blonde' wig - the blonde wig that she wears that has purple streaks.

  • Anonymous

it meansthat yes she feels she is rolling on ectsacy but the "just give in" part means that she wants to have a good time instead of fighting the drink she gives in and "So Happy I Could Die" means that she is so happy that she doesnt want the good time to end so she could die right there x

  • Anonymous

seriously guys. who cares what it means? its a good song. end of. and lyrics normally have deep personal meanings, but the people who write them dont write them for them to be picked apart by people...they write them to make good music and tell the world what they feel in a way no-one will quite understand.

  • Anonymous

it makes me think of rolling on ecstasy.
because you get this warm, happy feeling. "so happy you could die".
and think about it...touching yourself? what feels amazing, especially on E?
    sexual stimulation.
    amazing song!

She's stated in an interview its an analogy for drinking. The numbing effect giving her temporary escape and bliss from the "tears and all the lies". In the first stanza she is referring to herself in 3rd person, after drinking - which gives her a reassuring sense of self- confidence - a facade she carries to escape her own troubles/issues: "I love that lavender blond. The way she looks the way she talks. I touch myself can't get enough".

In the stanza " I am vain as I allow", we can see her makeup and hair represents the facade she carries when she is drinking. The fragility of this facade is symbolized through her constant need to physically touch herself and fix herself up.
And finally, In the bridge she is personifying the inescapable call of alcohol, emphasized be the emphasis of 'Just' in the line: "Just give in... open up your heart and your mind to me." Cause when she knows "the glass is empty, "the world is gonna bend".
Suggesting after she has drank, the alcohol will once again help her in her desperation to escape from her troubled reality.

I consider that when she talks about "that lavender blonde" she's talking about her best friend, she loves her but there are also some erotic sparks between them and so her friend+ a bottle of red wine = her touching herself all night long...

    Hahahah!
This is a good song! I like it!

Some of these comments are really funny, i like all the ideas of what the song means.

lady gaga is a genius, she writes deep and meaningful songs in such a way that she's able to cover up the obvious meaning. She makes it seem like shes drunk in a club and in love with her best friend, but its actually about the way she sees herself as lady gaga.
And how amusing that she told elle magazine that its all about masturbation, and then on a tv interview she said its about acoholism. Its just genius

You can discus about all kinds of reasons but this is the real one.

  • Anonymous

Guys the first verse is talking about other people getting jacked up off her "i love that lavender blonde" everyone else is all souped up touching themselves over her, and shes too busy drinking to really give a fuck what theyre doing.

  • So Happy I Could Die!

Really People!? This Is Mostly About How Lady Gaga Likes Touchin Herself. Not Really About Drinking. But What I Realllllyyy Think Its About Is Her Being Inlove With Women.

    ~~

  • Anonymous

    i think you are wrong

lady gaga is famous not stefani. Stefani had to become lady gaga to have success.

In this song stefani talks about lady gaga. The lavender blonde is lady gaga. The friends in the club are the others famous people. When she's gaga she is not her :stefani.

The song is about the fear she have to loose her personality. The monster lady gaga who wants to eat stefani.the fear of alcohol because she has to get drunk to be good. When she's drunk, she's happy but in fact when the glass is empty it's finished

So she uses alcohol to be good and to play the role of lady gaga

  • Anonymous

some lines r written from the way we feel about her.look at the first verse. cos she said that she was inspired by her fans & how they feel bout her. it's like "i love that lavender blond, the way she moves, walks.." yall see

I don't think this song is about achol.. I think it's about masterbading and beingnreally happy. (I fought myself all through the night) that part you can kinda tell.

  • Anonymous

omg u guys r f$#@ retards. This song is about alcohal.Dont u people get it happy in a club with a bottle of red wine.and shes so happy she doesnt realize she can die estupidos

Reply to "She didnt write the song..." & "who cares it is a good song lady gaga is awesome or it was a rewrite song for another singer that was a boy cause she has bought lots of songs from other people so i say it is a bought song or she is talking about herself" Lady Gaga writes ALL her songs and lyrics. She has said that on interviews, and you can just tell.

And I think she (Lady Gaga) is the lavender blonde. The song is probably all about falling in love with her image. I think that she got so drunk, or had such an overdose of some type of drug because she was depressed, that she's having these types of hallucinations of a woman, which turn out to be herself.

Then she is all happy! =)

  • Anonymous

you know what if you dont like da song then dont listen to it. lady gaga rcks and if you hate her then you suck.

  • Anonymous

In my opinion, the title "So happy I could die" Means she's in pure ecstasy. Also chourus obviously talks about drinking and love(or companionship).

1)The whole story is about her being so drunk, that she masturbates to her own beauty.

2)(Touching herself is symbolic for amazement) Throughout all her depression or self-consiousness, she drinks regain her self esteem with her friends and becomes very happy.

  • Anonymous

its about alchohol, b/c she clearly said so in a interview on t.v. when you dont know what the fuck its about shut up!

  • Anonymous

I do think it's about masturbating, thinking about her best friend whom she loves. It tackles the anguish and the pain of an impossible love, or what it implies to be in love with one's best friend, and deals with the feeling of completeness she has when she is with that woman. At that moment, she could die because being with her is all she wants. It says that masturbating soothes her temporarily, it makes her happy for a time.

  • Anonymous

who is such a creeper that they go look up the meanings of songs....retards. and.... "umm omg what does it mean touching myself...." umm what do you think it means douche...... why don't you go tell her she is a sinner and maybe she won't talk like that anymore kay sweetheart. and we wont have to sit here thinking woww... this person is a retarddddd

  • Anonymous

who fears alcohol? c'mon. and why is everybody freaking out cause shes talking about touching herself... "oh my god what did she mean when she said she is touching herself..." wow dumbass. what do you think it mean... it probably mean she is fucking touching herself. surprise surprise she is talking like she always does.

  • Anonymous

this song is about this and exactly this: the fear of alcohol and addiction-she may love alcohol and the good feeling it gives you, but not the affects of it. and the line"i touch myself and it's alright" may mean it's something that feels good and makes everyything better; like drinking...and "that glass is empty that the world is gona bend" know when, you've drinken allyour drink, and your most likely about to pukeand a deeper meaning could be, i am an alcoholic and it's ruining my life, even though it makes me happy, i could die from it

  • Anonymous

Oh come on, so what if its about masturbation? Yes, she is talking about her past with alcoholism blah blah blah, but it's hard to listen to the song without putting your hands down your pants.
Lady Gaga broke the silence behind the shame and discreet women won't admit to. Plus, she is proof that not just ugly girls masturbate. (=
    I AM A WOMAN AND I MASTURBATE.

  • Anonymous

It's been confirmed in a Fuse interview with her (that yes I did watch and not just hear about), that SHICD is about her fear of alcohol monster. When she sings about touching herself, is it an analogy related to drinking? It makes sense and "I touch myself" sounds better than saying "I drink".

"I love that lavender blond, the way she moves, the way she walks I TOUCH MYSELF, can't get enough. And In the silence of the night, I TOUCH MYSELF, and it's alright."

"I am as vain as I allow, I do my hair, I gloss my eyes, I TOUCH MYSELF all through the night. And when something falls out of place, I take my time, I put it back, I TOUCH MYSELF 'til I'm on track."

Substitute something about drinking into where she says "I touch myself", and it would make just as much sense.

  • Anonymous

I can relate to all of that so much haha.
Sry if it sounds creepy but I touch myself like that and I'm as vain as I allow and all of that... haha
It's great that she's so relatable.

And I think it's all basically about loving yourself.

  • Anonymous

personally i think the song is about lonleyness and being happy with what you've hot!

  • Anonymous

I think that the song is about being gay, and Being in love with her straight best friend. Cause she says, " Open up your heart and your mind to me. " And she sings about touching herself to the vision of a laveder blonde.

I believe is about self-esteem, self-love and self-respect, remember when she had lavender blonde hair? Is a direct reference to herself. Maybe the 'touch' is not only in the physical self, but in the ethereal sense, you 'touch yourself' to reach to your own self, to who you really are and into accepting yourself the "crash and burn" reference to drugs someone saw, could easily be that once you stop reveling upon all of your self-love and amazement, you have to face the cold, harsh world again, and you have to be ready for it, so you let no one bring you down.

Just a personal view on the song, please don't start flaming, is a bit moronic to flame over the lyrics of a song. It is open to interpretation from many points of view, so is quite silly to argue over it.

In the words of Lady Gaga "love each other"

  • Anonymous

It's about loving yourself, both physically and emotionally. I'm pretty sure she is the lavender blonde, as she had hair like that. Love it.

  • Anonymous

by touch her self she could mean to realise that shes not dreaming.
    not masturbating.

  • Bigpoppa

I personally do NOT think it's about masturbation. She is far to creative to do something so shallow however songs are like poems. The listener can interpret it any way he or she feels. even if GAGA herself says its about something people will still have it mean something different for them. I personally take the song to mean she is singing to herself. Her "fame self" and her regular self. Touching herself might also mean putting her hand to her heart or "thinking" about her life or getting in touch with the she she once was before becoming famous. The fame self of course gets anything she wants ie when the glass is empty the world is gonna bend meaning people will bend over backwards for her. She tries to touch herself "through all the tears and all the lies" might mean she tries to stay in touch with reality because "fame" can sometimes make a person loose control. She may be trying to stay focused to not get caught up in hard core drugs etc etc. When she says she is so happy she could die she may be saying it sarcastically like "wow another party big deal". After all a lot of famous people get tired of partying OR when they party the have to remember they are not totally surrounded by friends but just by people that want something from her. Also she may be saying "A bottle of wine" is ALL she needs and "its alright" because people around her may be offering her other things she knows she should stay away from but all she needs is her wine and the music. Thats how I take it but like i said everyone will "hear" this song differently. Only she knows for sure what it means because she wrote it but being an artist she will leave it for each person to make their own decision on the meaning.

well for all of u who thought the song was about masterbation ur all WRONG so yeah she says she touches herself but that is NOT masterbating u freaks!!!! any way all of u who thought it was about getting drunk UR WRONG TOOO its about her fear of alcohol and alcohol abuse...DUH and in the begining wen she describes the lavender blonde... if u were real gaga fans ud know that lady gaga is bisexual...for all u retards tht dont know what tht is its wen a person likes both sexes DUH so she could be describing a love interest... well now tht ive cleared tht up imma go and chill with my fransss byes!!!

  • Anonymous

wow you guys are so angry. chill out. arent you just meant to get what you get personally from songs?

  • Anonymous

You guys are all dumb. I love Lady Gaga and from what I've learned about her is that she is very unique and YOU HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO READ IN BETWEEN THE LINES OF HER WORDS. She goes so much more deeper than what she is actually talking about. Just like her lyrics. THAT SHE WRITES HERSELF. Have any of you ACTUALLY have listened to her whole entire album? Not every single song is about drugs or alcohol. But she did an interview with MTV talking about how each song on her album is about a certain fear. Example, "Monster" is about her fear of a typical man. She relates to so many people about the things the rest of the singers and song writers are too scared to talk about. She goes beyond just love. And in this song, I believe she's talking about herself. Because she says "I am as vain as I allow" It has nothing to do with masterbation you IDIOTS. THINK ABOUT IT. And she's talking about how she's having a good time with herself with a bottle of red wine. hint: "so happy i could die" JUST READ BETWEEN THE LINES AND GIVE HER A CHANCE. Not every single thing is about sex drugs and alcohol. She goes way deeper than that.

  • Anonymous

Eh the other person was actually right. Whether it was true or not, Gaga said it herself in an interview with MTV that the meaning behind this song was her fear of addiction, alcohol, and drugs.

WATCH LADY GAGA: ON THE RECORD ON FUSE YOU DUMBASSES. SHE TELLS YOU STRAIGHT TO YOUR FACE THAT EVERY SONG ON HER FAME MONSTER ALBUM IS ABOUT A CERTAIN FEAR OF HERS, AND THIS ONE IS ALCOHOL.

LMAOOO!!! to the comment BELOW ME YOUR A DUMB&#039SS. if u were such a f&#039ck&#039ng lady gaga fan you would know that she used to be obsessed with cocaine and did plenty of drugs while living in NYC andd she loves alcohol so wtf are you talking about? i love lady gaga to death but seriously your just a f&#039ck&#039ng POSER. at least do your research and get your facts straight if your going to be a poser like common now.

  • Anonymous

Yeah she actually is afraid of alcohol and drugs. All of you wannabe GaGa fans need to think before you say and get your facts straight. In the words of Gaga herself, the song "So Happy I Could Die" is about the fear of alcohol and drugs. Your all naive.

  • Anonymous

When she mentions the lavender blonde it doesn't necessarily mean she is talking about someone else.It could be from a third person perspective meaning she's singing the words of someone else who said it to her.

You guys...Lady Gaga is NOT afraid of drugs and alcohol! It doesn't get any simpler than the lyrics. She is having fun in a club partying. She is in love with herself. You guys have missed the entire point if you havent figured out she's centered her first and "second" CD around FAME and everyone's collective notion of how fabulous it is. She is getting drunk in a club and having a fantastic time. DUH. HAPPY in the club with a bottle of red wine. STARS IN OUR EYES because we're having a GOOD TIME. SO HAPPY I COULD DIE.

  • Anonymous

Wikipedia says it's about masturbation. Indeed, none of the tracks on the album have anything to do with drugs.

  • rolls602

I think that she is referring to herslef as the lavendar blonde. She also seems to be secretly in love w her best friend. Either way, this woman is brilliant in all that she has put out. I love how she is so unique, I totally disagree w her being weird, she is UNIQUE. I think that we have long awaited an artist like Stefani. We love you, girl!!

  • Anonymous

I think she is talking about how she is infatuated w herself. But it could also mean how she is secretly in love w her best friend. The lavendar blonde part confuses me. Either way, this woman is brilliant and I love everything that she has put out. Fashion shows were definitely meant for her, she is so unique and we have long awaited an artist like Stefani. We love you girl!

LOL touching yourself is another slang for "touching up" yourself. Which makes sense. But I guess to anyone else it could mean masturbation. she probably knew it'd be a double meaning.

  • Anonymous

It's very important to have in mind that she said that every song on her album "the fame monster" is dedicated to a monster she have seen on her world tour.. so the interpretation with the fear of alcohol and drugs seems pretty good to me :D

  • Anonymous

To me, this song is talking about a girl who's in love with her best friend (the way she moves/the way she walks/i touch myself/can't get enough), but her friend doesn't realize it, so the girl creates this euphoric fantasy world of alcohol and drugs and 'touching herself' where she's with the girl and everything is beautiful and happy (be your best friend and i'll love you forever/up in the clouds feeling higher than ever/so happy i could die/and its alright), but deep down, she realizes how empty she is and how none of it is true (and when something falls out of place/i take my time/i put it back/i touch myself till i'm on track)

it's a beautiful song. its very dark, but its subtle. its not your typical pop song. It's proof of GaGa's brilliance.

  • Anonymous

I absolutly LOVE this song! I love the meaning and the story. It's about her having a girl-crush on her best friend...

  • Anonymous

It sounds to me like a song about her sexuality. Lavender blonde could be another woman who she fancies; she's happy around her and is her best friend but feels like she can't move it to the next level because of society?
So she portrays the image that she's happy, when inside she wants to die because she can't have this person.

  • Anonymous

I think thats true but it's also about that making her feel bad so she just burys the problems by drinking and when shes drunk she thinks shes happy but deep down she wants to die? :S

  • Anonymous

...for the most part i think thats right but by lavender blonde i think she's refering to herself.

  • Anonymous
