Green Day
American Idiot
Wake me when September ends
Summer has come and past
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Like my father come to past
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

As my memory rests
But never forget what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and past
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Bring out the bells again

Well like we did when spring began
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are

As my memory rests
But never forget what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

(instrumental)

The innocent can never last

this song is about the terrorist attacks on 9/11. whenever they are saying "wake me up when september ends they are saying they are mourning the loss of so many innocent people.at least, that is what i think. all people interpret this song differently.

This song is about the death of Billie Joe Armstrong’s father. In 1983 when Billie Joe was jut ten years old; his father was diagnosed with throat cancer. “Like my father’s come to pass/ Seven years has gone so fast.” Green Day had started seven years after Billie Joe’s father had passed away.
Very similarly, “Twenty years has gone so fast,” Green Day had released this song in 2003 which is twenty years after Billie Joe had lost his father. One last line I want to highlight is, “Drenched in my pain again/ becoming who we are,” When his father was in the hospital Billie Joe went room to room singing to the patients. If he had not done this he might not have become a musician. While I don’t know everything about this heartfelt ballad these are some pretty good guesses as to the meaning of some of the lyrics in it.
