Comments and Song Meanings

Wow, people can be dense.
The song has a dual meaning.
It's anti-war, flat out. Whether that war is fought by soldiers in another country or your own personal war.
If you REALLY read the words... it's giving up on a lost cause. Like the sorry relationship you can't fix no matter how many times you bang your head against a wall.

I think that only the writer of the song can say exactly what was in his/her heart when they wrote the lyrics. But as with all art, it can it can mean many different things to different people.

This song is for alcoholics, about coming to terms with the devastation that it causes. It's a call to recognize that your beat by the disease and it's time to stop denying that fact and begin a new life; to rise from the ashes of ruins.

This song means so much to me. In twelve months my unit is deploying to Afghanistan. I'm worried, nervous, and a bit scared, but I signed up for this and I'm going to go through with it. Knowing there are people out there, such as Green Day, that support us in our fight to protect really helps. And I thank all who have come before me to fight.

This song means a lot to me. My uncle is currently in the war and my cousin passed away fighting for our country. It's heart-wrenching to hear it, but it reminds all of us that freedom doesn't come free. There's a fight being put up for it. Thanks GreenDay.

damn.. its all about the 21 gun salutes given to persons or soldiers, done heroic deeds, when they die..
it also portrays about our trials in life on how we surpass them.. and for that they give us 21 gun salutes for winning the battles in life

The "One, 21 Guns" is referring to the one twenty-one gun "Salute" soldiers of an honor guard deliver to the fallen soldiers of war. It's quite heart-wrenching to hear this song although I love it. It means (Well, to me anyway) a lot, especially after losing so many friends and family to this war in the military, and being a Marine myself, it's nice to have a group like Green Day (my fave band since I was about 4) devote a song like this to the soldiers and such during a time such as this... Thank you, Green Day.
