Green Day - 21 Guns Lyrics

Artist: Green Day

Album: 21st Century Breakdown

  • Songwriters: Billie Joe Armstrong, David Bowie, Michael Pritchard, Frank E., Iii Wright

Do you know what's worth fighting for?
When it's not worth dying for?
Does it take your breath away
And you feel yourself suffocating?

Does the pain weigh out the pride?
And you look for a place to hide?
Did someone break your heart inside?
You're in ruins

One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms, give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky, you and I

When you're at the end of the road
And you lost all sense of control
And your thoughts have taken their toll
When your mind breaks the spirit of your soul

Your faith walks on broken glass
And the hangover doesn't pass
Nothing's ever built to last
You're in ruins

One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms, give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky, you and I

Did you try to live on your own
When you burned down the house and home?
Did you stand too close to the fire
Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone?

When it's time to live and let die
And you can't get another try
Something inside this heart has died
You're in ruins

One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms, give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky

One, 21 guns
Lay down your arms, give up the fight
One, 21 guns
Throw up your arms into the sky, you and I

The highest salute you can recieve in the US military is a 21 Gun Salute, guns are fired 21 times at 5 second intervals.

This is my first listen ever to this song. Songs can mean many things to many people.
To me, this is about being defeated. Its never a pretty thing, whether you are losing to a foreign army, or an addiction, giving up is both bitter and liberating. So you can't be the king of the world. Go be a good neighbour instead. Greenday has made a song to make you think. It has me. My 13 year old left it on our computer. I am 55, and the comments I've read are often insightful. I'd say Greenday have done good.
btw for all you support the troops types, listen to CBC's Afghanada if you get a chance. It is about Canadian troops in Afghanastan. It is a radio drama. Fiction. Art. About war and the toll it takes. I personally don't think it is a winnable war in the traditional sense. We have to negotiate with the taliban in the end, and send that country down the road to their destiny. You can say war is wrong, but if your home gets bombed, opinions change. Pakistan and Afgahnastan are hotbeds of anti west hatred. We can only hope we can set the mess right.

    Cheers.

i love green day i think this is one of the best songs they had ever sing i just love their lyrics sooooo much nd they touch my heart

  • Anonymous

green day is very liberal and there are 2 ways to interpret anything...The right way and the wrong way. When they wrote it, they had a certain meaning to it, and if you interpret differently than they do, well then it's the wrong interpretation. If they intended it to be anti-military, then it is.

I can't say I know what this song meant to Greenday, but we have burried many Soldiers here in Afghanistan with this song playing at their memorial. To us, the Soldiers here dying, it is beautiful and is a tribute to our commrades.

  • Anonymous

It is antiwar...the writer has openly said so and expounded on it for months. It is not a tribute to soldiers, alcoholics, relationship struggles, etc. It's more or less another middle finger to the Bush Administration. I like the sound of the song, and I'm always curious at how people decide to interpret the lyrics. I do support our military, however, and I'm afraid that a catchy song from some Berkley dropouts isn't going to make me rethink my stance there. Stop taking yourself so seriously, Billy Jack.

do u know whats whats worth fighting for?this song!!!! greenday can produce song like this, meaning they are very mature guys who knows whats going on in surroundings..... thats something can be proud of about this band.....

  • Anonymous

I'd really admire this song something give us a sense of wealth and courage for our camaraderie soldiers. They fight and protect our country in order to have peace and in order.kohima boys

    "THANKS GREENDAY

  • Anonymous

I like Green Day a lot and while there is no doubt a group of guys from Berkley, such as they are, would be anything but anti-war protestors but I want any soldier that reads this to know I support them and appreciate all they do for the protections they provide me and my family. God bless you and keep you safe. Without you bands like Green Day would not have the freedom to sing about whatever comes to their heart on stage.

I DONT KNOW WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS SONG...BUT I KNOW THIS IS FOR ALL PEOPLE FIGHTING FOR THEIR COUNTRY!!!

ALL I WANT TO SAY IS " I LIKE IT SO
    MUCH..MUUUAAHHH!!!

  • Anonymous

As a marine who served 3 tours in Iraq, this song pisses me off. Green day is a very talented band but they come off as an anti military/anti establishment group, which is absolutely their right but I take pride in serving my country and will continue to defend those rights.

Songs can ,ean anything you want them to mean. It's your own interpertation that makes you love such songs as this one

  • Anonymous

GOOD SONG GOOD SONG... BUT AFTER READING ALL DEM COMMENTS I DONT KNOW WHAT THE HELL IT MEANS ANYMMORE;)

  • Anonymous

i think what greenday is trying to say is war (military war)is meaningless. its brutal and it had sacrifice lots of innocent people. at some point this song wud make sense to any soldier who questioning their purpose being on the battlefield n feel sick of what they're doing there. its ruining their lives and doesnt worth the 21 gun salutes.

  • Anonymous

    Wow, people can be dense.

The song has a dual meaning.

It's anti-war, flat out. Whether that war is fought by soldiers in another country or your own personal war.
If you REALLY read the words... it's giving up on a lost cause. Like the sorry relationship you can't fix no matter how many times you bang your head against a wall.

  • Anonymous

whoever don't like this song is sooo mean greenday had to work hard to write songs i higly doubt that you can make songs!! so don't judge about what it means just listen and appreciate music!!! and don't be so judgemental they did what they did and thats it so deal with it!! like we have to deal with your sorry asss!!!!

  • Anonymous

This song is for alcoholics, about coming to terms with the devastation that it causes. It's a call to recognize that your beat by the disease and it's time to stop denying that fact and begin a new life; to rise from the ashes of ruins.

  • Anonymous

honestly i really dont think this song has anything to do with war read between the lines;] but ilove this song:]

i think this song is about our daily battles that everyone has to face, but also our wars like iraq and afghanistan. this song means alot to me.

  • Anonymous

This song means so much to me. In twelve months my unit is deploying to Afghanistan. I'm worried, nervous, and a bit scared, but I signed up for this and I'm going to go through with it. Knowing there are people out there, such as Green Day, that support us in our fight to protect really helps. And I thank all who have come before me to fight.

The "One, 21 Guns" is referring to the one twenty-one gun "Salute" soldiers of an honor guard deliver to the fallen soldiers of war. It's quite heart-wrenching to hear this song although I love it. It means (Well, to me anyway) a lot, especially after losing so many friends and family to this war in the military, and being a Marine myself, it's nice to have a group like Green Day (my fave band since I was about 4) devote a song like this to the soldiers and such during a time such as this... Thank you, Green Day.
