Gorillaz - On Melancholy Hill Lyrics

Artist: Gorillaz

Album: Plastic Beach

Genre: Hip Hop/Rap

  • Songwriters: Damon Albarn, Jamie Hewlett

Up on melancholy hill
There's a plastic tree
Are you here with me?
Just looking out on the day
Of another dream

Well you can't get what you want
But you can get me
So let's set up and see
'Cause you are my medicine
When you're close to me
When you're close to me

So call in the submarines
'Round the world well go
Does anybody know
If were looking out on the day
Of another dream

If you can't get what you want
Then you come with me

Up on melancholy hill
Sits a manatee
Just looking out on the day
When you're close to me
When you're close to me

When you're close to me

It's not "So let's set up and see", it's "So let's set out to sea"... :/

since murdoc wrote this song, i think he was speaking about noodle. :3

  • Bloodsugarx

its actually about Gorillaz, 2D is stuck with Murdoc, who kidnapped him and always abuses him, missing Noodle and not being able to know if she's really alive, "if you cant get what you want then you can get me"- she is off after her own goals and 2D wishes for her to come back, and saying that if she cant get what she is after- she can always come back where he keeps waiting for her

This song is about the Gorillaz going to Plastic beach. Part of the main story of the band. Lyric's are referring to the story. The meaning is something everyone find's and pretend to interpret from it.

my interpretation of this song is that the man is living a fake life (plastic tree) just dreaming of the woman he loves, the man ventures the world looking for them. when the man finally does find the woman he loves, (the manatee) she is corrupted by another person, and the man tries to get rid of said person, but the person drags the woman down with her.

I love the song. One of the slower beautiful songs Gorillaz has written. Its kind of more like the songs "El Manana" and "Latin Simone(English version)" I just love it! Definitely my favorite song from the Plastic Beach album, next to "Broken", "Empire Ants", ...I just love Gorillaz!

  • Anonymous

This is the song that keeps her on my mind. Yes she broke up with me for some one else but I only care about what's good for her so if she's happy then I'm happy too and I'll always be here for her that is if anything bad happens. ........hard to believe it's been two years and it felt like yesterday but she's my number one girl and always will be.

it's a weird sort of feeling you get when you listen to this song, you can't help but reminisce about the past. at one point, you hope that the person will come back to you, but then again it's only because they can't get what they truly want.

i've listened to this song so many times now, and it still gives you this feeling you can only understand after you've yourself have heard it.
    so good.

This song is so beautiful. The way everyone explained it is amazing. It's how I feel almost all the time..

  • Anonymous

I love this song because it can be interpreted in so many different ways. It has a different meaning for everyone that hears it, and there's just something beautiful about a song that makes everyone feel something.

Nothing more to add than alreadys been written except to say manatees are one of the coolest & most adorable animals ever. More needs to be done to protect them. Is this the only song with manatee in the lyrics?

  • Anonymous

I think he is talking about weed. I know where confusion can cause different interpretations because I can watch the video and explain a whole different meaning.

  • thommie64

it's the perfect 'ode' for the infamous quote "misery loves company"......such is life....

  • Anonymous

Sure I think many people finally needs a solution for they goals out of the right way, a plastic and heartless way as the excess of money . Evangelist is over the manatee, he darks all the good thinkings. it is a temptation. what do you think...

  • Anonymous

might it not be something to do with the pacific gyre and manatees becoming extint due to all the plastic we're producing? so if we all wake up to that and join gorillaz then we'll be in a new dawn, new dream kind of thing....

  • Anonymous

I agree with a lot of people about what the songs is about,
It's about someone who is in love with someone who doesn't love his back. He's fantasizing about being with her and traveling the world. I agree, I think the manatee represents his heart that he has on Melancholy Hill.
He's asking if she is on Melancholy Hill, which I think is a place he goes to think about thier memories they've shared together "Just looking out on the day of another dream"
This was me and my boyfriends song...but he just recently broke up with me. This was our song because this I guess what he felt before we started dating.
But now, this songs mirrors exactly how I feel. I love him, but he doesn't love me back...

  • Anonymous

I am listening to this song (for the third time) as i write this....
I read some of the comments here and it compelled me to write something. I am exactly feeling the same this beautiful song spills out: delicate depression, weak hope, strong sorrow and quiet resignation. Sublime feelings when you're soberly objective about a situation involving a girl that just doesn't want to be with you.
It hurts so that sadness is less attractive at a certain point and all you can cling on to is thoughts of adventure and little islands of self-made fantasy.
Commenting into the air is my way out so far, never done it. I feel better now......all because of this song. I ceased crying for once, thanks to this song. I have hope (not the happy one) but a realistic view; sounds odd yet very true....all thanks to this song!! all thanks to GOrillaz

@ Anonymous, at least you're waiting with a lovely little ditty playing in your head.I've had the singer's gently soothing voices in my head for days since I saw this on tv. I've been stupidly out of touch with the Gorillaz for way too long. It ends way too soon, as ll great songs do.

  • Anonymous

love this song, im in love with someone i cant have , but im still waiting, just waiting

  • Anonymous

My take on the song is that first, he is on the sad hill of depression living a fake life (plastic tree), thinking if the person he loves is also on the hill of depression with him. All he can do is dream that this is true, since the one he loves doesn't want him as much as he wants them. But he wants to still be with them, because they make him feel better/less depressed (medicine). SO he wants to go on an adventure with them, around the world of their feelings, to see if his dream can become reality or not. At the end, I think of the manatee as sort of a guardian angel for the main person, whose waiting for the day that the two will be together finally.

Awesome song to play on cello and guitar. I saw these guys in concert, it was awesome. Their songs are deep, thats why i like 'em. They have sense to them (feel good inc is really sad D:)

  • Anonymous

this song is beautifully sad and hopeless:) 4 me, it's about fellin so strongly 4 someone that u don't even care if they could never love u propally. not caring that ur not their no.1 priority ect... just being around them is enough 4 u, and when ur not: that's meloncholy hill. but thats not the only reason ur there. There's a Shit Load of stuff that's landed u there... [various factors] The songs so calm and flowing, i also think that's is about accepting ur there on meloncholy hill, and there's not a hell of a lot u can do about that. u just hav to let time run its course, inevidbly. ^_^

I have lost a girl for three years ago. But she's still on my mind. I haven't found love again since I lost her.
She's my medicine when she's near me.
She's pregnant wuth another guy, but she will always be my no. 1
    I dedicate this to her

  • Anonymous

this song just fits my life right now cuz I love someone who still loves another person, but what she loves is what he was not what he is....so she can't get what she want....but still can get me....and when I'm close to her it seems like the world is perfect...... wish me luck on my love!

  • Anonymous

OMFG! this song just defines what i'm feeling right now.....just perfect

  • Anonymous

You know what I've noticed about this song? I've noticed that it could just be about Melancholy. e.g. "looking out at the day of another dream" could be the reminiscing of better days. Maybe he lost someone and Melancholy hill is his mind, a place that's like a portal to his memories and he is with the memory of the one h lost looking out at all the other dreams and memories.

  • Anonymous

For the Gorillaz, I think it has to do with 2D beginning to miss Noodle. How he stares at Evil Noodle and there are intersetions with the real Noodle afterwords.

For the lyrics themselves I just agree with what everyone says.

  • micons

The name manatí comes from the Taíno, a pre-Columbian people of the Caribbean, meaning "breast". The manatee has been linked to folklore on mermaids. In West African folklore, they were sacred and thought to have been once human. Killing one was taboo and required penance.

my boyfriend dedicated this song to me
when we didnt see each other for a month

This song has the same tune as Tony Orlando & Dawn's Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree. Given that, I think this song as an anti-war song. Plus, what about the yellow submarine? What do you think?

  • Anonymous

i'd really hate to read too far into this as a song (i mean, guys, it's the gorillaz, seriously) but this song is gorgeous, and is just so wistful, and makes me feel incredibly sad for the times i've missed and incredibly happy for the things i'll experience. it is a departure from what they normally do, for sure, but where the boat is headed is a wonderful place. (sorry for all the sappy figurative language)
    positively lovely.

This song is exactaly my life. I have only ever loved one person and I would do any thing to get her back. I feel a special happyness when ever I am around her and often times fantacize about traveling the world with her. Somebody posted "This song just makes me so happy to be alive.. makes me think of a certain someone I lost. I want to sing this to her." earlyer and I have very simmilar feelings

  • DarthValk

Mhh i´ve read some comments some agree or close to the mean of the song. In my analsysis it´s about a someone who is always looking on the outside the material things forgetin about the inside, in the world that we live in the world of commerce, trade, of the i bought, in the money. But finally the real happiness is inside in ourselves. This is the medicine, the happiness we are trying to find is not in the outside. It´s in our people. The manatee means someone whos is slow, sad in life and not in the mood, melancholic And ALONE!!(most of the world's people). Thas an awesome song who inspires and the voice of damon whos sads songs on many of his bands always rocks!!!

  • Anonymous

I love the song...It's a song about a thought that entered his mind while reminiscing about her...I think the manatee signifies his heart, gentle and kind because of his love for her which may be unspoken and on this high hill where noone can reach is where he will keep his heart for only her...he misses her and i think the submarine is for them to be alone in a world that is not theirs but still is a part of actual reality...a means of escape where being around her makes him feel whole again...in a space created by them ...idk ... he wants to be with her...and is waiting for her to hear his thoughts...

this song is fcking epic. the best in the plastic beach album! love it! i almost cry when i hear it. it's just so beautiful

  • Anonymous

This song is beautiful! Its the most played song on my iPod. I know how to play it off by heart on guitar! Love the Gorillaz for eva!

  • Anonymous

I think what the song is talking about is how the world is made and people think money buys everything. but all this person wants is 1 thing, Love. Which in this world is hard to find due to people making money and buying stuff they dont need. its also about how theres always hope if you explore than staying around (hence melancholy hill, plain and sad setting) and (the submarine which is happy and new and lively.)

This is just my theory and i also like sum of the other peeps theorys of the meaning to

  • S.R.R

hey, back to that "I think Gorillaz is one of the best bands in the world. They give you a feeling of hope and a chance to dream" comment--- you read my mind ^_^ they inspire me to. Like, I play cello, key board (by ear) and im learning guitar. I never feel alone when I listen to them ^_^ I always have hope. Music opens the soul.

  • S.R.R

I think that 2-D is looking back on all the crap
Murdoc put him through. I would be mad to if some drunk introduced me to him by making my eyes go all weird, gassing me to plastic beach and alot more junk. He's just looking back when he acutally OWNED his LIFE...Technicaly, Murdoc is living through Noodle and 2-D.

  • Anonymous

the person is obviously sad he cannot have the love of his life. reason being she has someone else in mind. he dreams of better days of when they were together. he goes on to say he may not be the best but just being close to her makes him feel amazing. he would take her around the world to show his love but it is just another dream/wish/hope. he then says if she cannot get the person shes going for to just go with him. the manatee would signify an illusion he has of being with her.

that pretty much sums up the song for me its a song of hopless love but nonetheless B-E-A-U-tiful

  • Anonymous

An evocative and wistful song. Tragically beautiful melody amid poignant and reflective words. A meditative emancipation of his silent despair. 2-D is eerily captivating. This is testament to the splendor of British music.

  • sunshinegal

As soon as I heard this song I had to listen again and again and again ...I just love it!

I must say, this is one of my all time favorite Gorillaz song. Everyone in their life time have been 'On Melancholy Hill'

  • Anonymous

My favorite songs are always the ones that are gibberish
    Nonsense wakes up the brain
The meaning of this song may not have been intended but every person sees meaning in something and although they see it differently as everybody else there is always one.
To me the song is a metaphor for being sad, melancholy hill would be the place you go in your head when you are sad. When I am sad everything seems to be so fake "Plastic" "There's a plastic tree"

  • Anonymous

I love this song, best song off the alnum and of the year so far!! I think its about him loving a girl, but she loves someone else, but he still says that if she doesnt get with the other guy, then he doesnt mind being second best as he loves her so much

  • Anonymous

Albarn said himself that most of his lyrics are just gibberish he throws in after the music. This one's a little bit more coherent than most, but there's still not much there to analyze.

  • Anonymous

Of course the song has meaning. Why would Gorillaz make such an amazing song and just aimlessly throw a bunch of words together. This is what I think... He is sitting, pondering about a girl he is in love with, maybe a friend, but doesn't know how to tell her or make the transition. This weighs on his mind, as he feels melancholic when he thinks of her. This girl of his dreams is apparently preoccupied with her own troubles (maybe preventing her from connecting with him), and he, in a daydream, is comforted by the Aladdin-like fantasy of traveling the world with her, taking her away from her troubles. He wants to use this as his chance to win her heart. In some Native American cultures, manatees were a spiritual symbol of trust and gentleness. In other cultures, manatees have always been considered gentle and kind. He is defining himself as such, as he knows that in his heart he is the right one for her and her for him. All he must do is wait.

  • Anonymous

I think analysing all their songs is a bit far-fetched sometimes. I actually see this as a deep love-song, and even without thinking about it too much, you just know what it is about. Gorillaz work magic I tell you.

  • Anonymous

hmm...maybe it has meaning..maybe it doesn't...but it's rthym is so sweet..yet the lyrics so simple..."are you here with me?"....will make you think...make you float on a cloud of dreams...

  • Anonymous

    poor bastards
so bloody obvious that this song is a joke with no depths or whatever

  • Anonymous

I think the first person who commented was on to something. Manatees were mistaken for mermaids in the past. Even though she wants him, she waits for the day that he is close to the one he wants, his "medicine".

  • Anonymous

This song just makes me so happy to be alive.. makes me think of a certain someone I lost. I want to sing this to her.

  • Anonymous

another hit for gorillaz for sure! this song, stylo and some kind of nature are my fav songs in this album

  • Anonymous

I fell in love with this song,I makes me sad but thoughtful...it has a dreaming tone, but it's also sad...just so sweet. I'm A fan of the Gorillaz, and always will be....

    It makes me dream

    like this song a lot,

    good job!!

    Glou D.

I love this song. I'm in a relationship held together by wistfulness, so it really fits. It just captures the emotion so perfectly.

seems about the outlook on our days as dreams because of how connected we are to the things that spark so many intricate memories for us
if you can connect with love then you can feel at home
