probably close or related OP, but Dave Grohl had a big phobia of flying. I'm pretty sure it is him getting over having to fly, since they tour all the time.

So the Foo's debut of this song was at a USO concert at the White House. Though there may be other meanings to the song, I think it's fitting that most of the lyrics fit with what many of our wounded soldiers experience being evacuated by helicopter from a battleground. When you're lying there on the ground in pain and you think it's all over, and you're not going to make it back home, the wheels of the MEDEVAC helicopter touch the ground next to you and you know you might get a second chance. Those dusty black wheels are the best sight you could hope to see. Thank you to all in the search&rescue community for your service, "so that others may live."
