Florence - Dog Days Are Over Lyrics

Artist: Florence

Album: Miscellaneous

Genre: Electronic

Happiness hit her like a train on a track*
Coming towards her stuck still no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled
With every bubble she sank with her drink
And washed it away down the kitchen sink

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run

Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your longing behind
You cant carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
Because here they come

And I never wanted anything from you
Except everything you had and what was left after that too, oh
Happiness hit her like a bullet in the head
Struck from a great height by someone who should know better than that

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
Because here they come

Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your loving, your loving behind
You cant carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
Because here they come

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run

This song is about her becoming a vegitarian and giving up hot dogs she did an interview about it.

BUT you can mke the song be what ever you want thats the nice thing about music.

When I was a kid, the old folks used to call the hottest, rainiest days of the summer, usually August, the dog days.

Like the emperor who wore no clothes and only a child would speak out and say so. The other people all descibed the beautiful clothes he had on (all were descriptions were different because he had none on.) Reminds me of this song. It has no meaning and people think it does. But I'm sure you spent your money to buy it so this woman would become richer. Hey!! Maybe that's why she sang this song!!!!!!

To ME personally, this song is about depression. The dog is the black dog that winston churchill talked about, and it is said that Florence suffers from depression. It is a beautiful song and whether she intended it to be deep or not, it is WONDERFUL.

Oh come now, it's clearly about an ending to the year of the dog moving into the year of the horse. The disappearance of the seven years that would normally separate the year of the dog and the year of the horse signifies a coming of spiritual age and enigmatic philosophical understanding with aliens.

I think everyone should stop trying to analyze songs, and let them mean whatever they do to whoever is listening to it; that's the point of music, isn't it? I could listen to a song, and think it means one thing -- you could listen to that very same song, and think it means something completely different. We're different people, so we're bound to have different ideas about everything we listen to. That's the beautiful thing about music, don't you think? :]

it is an amazing song, but I think some people have over analysed it and obviously have no life. It's a great song so why don't you just listen to it and then make up your own story because other people don't really care.

IDK I think the song could mean many things and she purposely made it like that so it could relate to everyone and their own experinces. Hmm, maybe (:

This has nothing to do with romantic love. It is about suicide. Florence's grandmother killed herself after her husband died. Read the lyrics, you'll see it makes perfect sense. Her grandmother started romancing the idea of death after her husband dies, as she got depressed after his passing and started drinking to cope with reality, but she can't escape the idea of death as 'happiness'. "Struck from a great height by someone who should know better than that": her grandma knew better than killing herself, but was too depressed to think clearly.

To me, this song reveals a bittersweet battle with what the artist thought would bring her happiness, namely love. She looked for happiness and imagined it to be love. When she found love, it came at her like "a train on a track." This could be a reference to how hard she falls emotionally, when she thinks she finds love.

But love always seems to let her down. So the artist portrays love as a wretched experience from which she has to hide.

However, she can't resist love. She continues to get sucked back in by it. To her, it offers a singular sensation. It makes her feel wild and calm in the same moment (hence the exhilarating feel of the music/melody),

But as hard as she pushes to achieve that happiness, she "kills it with kisses". The small fleeting moments of it, she drinks up. But with every drink ("bubble"), she falls deeper and deeper away from achieving love. It's as though she drank the bottle of love so dry that she was stuck in the bottom of the bottle with no hopes of reaching the top.

Then comes the chorus. The Dog Days are the days she felt pulled apart by love. The days she was breaking down and couldn't escape.

With the chorus, she expresses her resolve to get past The Dog Days because they hurt so much (i.e. The dog days are over. The dog days are done.). But just as happiness (love) struck her forcefully "like a train on a track" in the past, happiness (love) is still chasing her (i.e. The horses are coming.). She remains susceptible to its siren call, so she tells herself she better escape its allure (i.e. So you better run. [it feels as though she tries to insulate herself from the grip love has on her. She tries to convince herself that she is doing the sensible thing by fleeing from it.]).

She pushes herself more in the next verse. She tells herself to flee anywhere there is a refuge of true love, namely family. The love of her family is a refuge from all the hurt of passionate love. Hence why she is running "for" her "mother...father...children...sisters and brothers". This could also be a reference to 'for" in the sense that she is making them proud to flee from love, which hurts her. She is doing an act in which she can say: "Look dad, brother, sister, etc., I'm gonna make it. Don't worry about me."

When she sees her old, volatile friend love calling to her again, it makes her "long" for its embrace. But she tries to tell herself to fight its call (i.e. Leave all your love and your longing behind.). She affirms to herself that you can't move on and survive your life if you always fall pray to the whirlwind that is love (You can't carry it with you if you want to survive."

So she reassures herself once again that "The dog days are over. The dog days are done." But still, she "hear[s] the horses" and knows the edge is always close by.

In the lyrics, she then stops and switches gears. The music pauses and changes to a slow lyric statement addressed directly to love. She is apologetic. But at the same time she is brazenly unapologetic. She feels that she didn't ask much of love (i.e. I never wanted anything from you). But at the same time she considers wanting "everything" from love not too much to ask. After all, what is life worth if you don't ask for everything out of love. Every last moment and feeling of ecstasy that it can provide. It is nirvana and we shouldn't be ashamed that it's our achilles heal at the same time.

Sweet baby jesus it's just a freakin' song! UR NOT MEANT TO TAKE IT SO SERIOUSLY!!!!! I kinda agree with eggshell dude. Half the time I don't even know what I'm writing (don't comment on that...) so chances are florence didn't either. Could be wrong but I'm not sure that while writing it she was thinking entirely of the book of revelations! Soza god/dog dude. Not that I was there at the time so I can't say for sure but it just somehow doesn't seem altogether likely to me. I have been wrong in the past though. Seriously though, all you dudes debating this song like it's a matter of world importance, just take a deep breath and wake up and smell the milkshake! It's no biggie. Btw great song florence. ;)

Well, i have a completely different interpretation for this song... I bet Florence herself didn't even think about it.

For me, it deals with the transition from childhood to adulthood. The "dog days" refers to the first step at hunting when they let the dogs go and search for games. Then, when they've found something, "the horses are coming", with the hunters who are obviously going to shoot the games. Childhood would be represented by the dog days, when you don't really know what to expect from people (the "dogs") and then you realize what life really is, when you "hear the horses coming". "So you'd better run", "leave all your loving behind, you can't carry it with you if you want to survive".
Quite pessimistic view of life, i know :D

I dont like fanatic people. Please get a grip.

The song for me is about how when you fall in love forget everyone and run away from everything to be with your lover, for me its about abossessive love. How you be obsessed with one person and you just dont care about anything. I dont really agree but I think its grat music, great voice and good lyric.

Before commenting please learn how to read poetry! Please it seems lie only portuguese people can do that...

Why is eggshell paint that colour? Hmmm.

For fuck sake. Maybe this is just a more or less entertaining song. It doesn't have to be some long-lost gospel or something. And most authors worth their salt, at least the intuitive ones, only half an approximate idea of what the fuck they're writing.

Quantum, baby. By interpreting the lyrics, you determine their 'meaning'.

    FROM WIKIPEDIA:
"The lyrics of the song tell a story of the inconvenience that love is in general and how one would be better off without it considering the pain it can bring. Happiness is not usually compared to a "Bullet in the head", implying that the song is about running away from happiness that can so easily be taken away. "The dog days are over" reflects the solution to avoid witnessing things going wrong is to run away from it completely"
