Florence - Cosmic Love Lyrics

Everyone has their own meaning of this song, this is my personal interpretation:

She starts off talking about falling in love with this person, a love that maybe she didn't want to accept and was painful but so powerful that it broke in. Then once her loved one tore down her wall, she felt alone and exposed with her dreams seeming unreachable but she was okay and willing to give it all up because she had found love. Hence, her hearing the heartbeat. And she was stuck there without anything else to look to but her lonliness in his love, and it progressively got worse until she could no longer hear him because she was so lost in love. This was her lowest of lows, confused and without him, love wasn't beautiful anymore so she disregarded her feelings and without them was able to find a way out of this darkness. However, once she was ready to leave she was also able to see that he had also sacrificed himself and was just as scared, alone and lost as her. Due to true love which involves sacrifice, she stayed in the dark with him.

I loved this song since it came out, but then I saw the trailer for 'Water for Elephants', and I thought that it just fit perfectly, and I have found a new love for it.

I actually think she is talking about God. She does believe in God (listent o her song "you've got the love") and that makes a lot more sense to me. To me, she is aknowledging that God is in conrtol, even when things turn dark, but he is there with us and we can hear his heart beating if we search for it. Maybe the "falling star" that hit her was a lost love, but I think the one she stays with is God. It is a beautiful song.

I used to hate her. But ever since I heard this song I finally realized what she writes about. She writes deep emotional poetry that everyone has their own little meaning for. Most of my friends don't get her music but I do. All they listen to is that getting money and having sex all day crap. And I used to be like them but after this song my whole musical experience changed. I love her so much and she is my inspiration!

This song totally reminds me of my first love. I was in love with him from age 16 till now and I’m almost 21. He and I grew really close two winters ago and we only had the title of dating. I was crazy about him and unexpectedly my older brother committed suicide and I found myself getting lost in my guy. He was my drug. He numbed the pain of my brother’s passing until I went and visited him at his school only to find out that he had a girlfriend. My world fell apart. Two men that I loved left in a short period of two months. I was in this darkness for so long and the reality of my brother’s passing came to life. I’ve never been in so much pain in my entire life until I he left me and then the pain of my brother’s passing hit me like a runaway train. I’m still trying to run from the shadow of my first love’s heart but it’s so hard to!

This son has such a great impact on me. I had been in love with this guy for three years, and then he used me and left me in the darkness. He hasn't talked to me since he told me that he never loved me and I feel like I'm only in the shadow of his heart, just someone that isn't important. But, I still love him so much and in the future if he gets his heart broken and is in the darkness too, I want to be there for him and show him that my heart beats for him.

This song reminds me of my 1st. I am married and have not seen my 1st for over 20 yrs. But he found me a almost a couple yrs ago on FB. I am married, but although we were so young we talked like no time had passed. I wasn't lonely anymore. Without intention that 1st phone conversation turned into an emotional affair. My husband found out and we for the most part we stopped speaking. Although we didn't believe in it, we thought we were soul mates. I know he still misses me and hurts as much as I do..the "what if", kills us. We both need to move on with our lives because we just can't be together. But not a a day goes by that I don't think about him.

I feel as if im her right now... im just waiting waiting for him in this darkness... Hes my best friend and i like him really really like him. And i thought he liked me but now hes unsure of what he wants or even who. i feel i have no chance against the other girl but still i wait. I kno hes been hurt so hes prob. just as scared as i am but im willing to wait til he gets back. Hes going back to his base then maybe back to Iraq. But honestly i feel like just a shadow to him. He doesnt want a relationship yet he made me like him and think that we could be more than friends and now im just stuck here til he can make up his mind. And in the darkness i wait only hearing the beating of my own heart...

yesterday i was in love with her and still by now, but she left me and had a relationship with someone else (yes i was in the darkness), after 1 year of their relationship anniversary, her boyfriend was chose to ended the relationship (yes she was in the darkness too) and now i realized that i still love her, everytime she feel hurt i can feel it too.
And you know what i think that she is in love with me too, yes she showed it to me, but everything can't be done easily, our distance is too far, too far to have a relationship, so we stayed in our darkness, waiting and doing our usual habits everyday till the condition support us to have a great relationship

To me, this song seems like it's about someone who can't make up his mind about what he wants. The singer of the song thinks that her lover is just being fickle, and feels like she's in a state of limbo not knowing if she's going to be rejected (hence the darkness). She figures a way to get out of this relationship, but she realizes he's just as scared and confused as she is (they're in the darkness together), so she decides to stay and try to make sense of their "Cosmic Love."

For myself it's through this chasm of running darkness and fallen trees where I must live between the lines and always will I love you, more.

I believe it is more positive than everyone thinks.

Firstly she is alone in the darkness of her love against a man , who doesn't love her back.
But then he's also there in the dark. He falls in love with her, too. So they both stay in that blindness of love.

to me, its a love that never got closure. you're floating in the abyss, in requiem, in purgatory. you know something was meant to happen, though you realize too late. both of you realize, and you want it so bad...
you cant turn on the light because there are barriers preventing this from happening... so many years too late, and you want nothing more than to be with this person trapped in purgatory with you.
and you are phsyically so far apart, but there is a mental connection.. you know when they think of you...

As I first heard the Song I thought about the Show Supernatural... (yeah my fav ;)) but it kind of fits on the Brothers Dean and Sam. As Dean died and Sam couldnt bare it. He turned to the darkness because without his brother his family he sees no Dawn and no day. So for me its a brotherly kind of Love. And since the brothers are soulmates... the title Cosmic Love just fits perfect. ^^

So that is what I think of when I hear this song ;).

This song will always mean something to me. I'm in love with my ex who still loves me but for one reason or another we are not together. Life is too short and I don't understand why we can't be together and work through any barriers together. But he made this bed that I have to lie in. Waiting for the day I get over it.

The music is so intense and her voice is absolutely amazing.

I know this song is probably about falling inlove but after my sister had a traumatic miscarriage, this song spoke to me. We are very close and I am pregnant too so I really felt her pain so badly as she was totally devastated. To me, this song is about conception, 'A falling star fell from your heart and landed in my eyes', the blind love of your daydreams of hopes and dreams of a child and the loss of a potential life that you spent so long thinking about. It is a very poignant song that is very personal to me and so can be interpreted in many different ways, like art, that is its beauty.

This also reminds me of Midna from Twilight Princess!
Dont worry, your not the only one. I have to listen to this song whenever I play Twilight Princess, it's slightly funny whenever Midna talks, and Florence is singing. It seems like she is singing herself.

okay it didnt say she ever found him again but that she knew he was in the dark to and just decided to stay in the dark. i think thats because she stood where she was to be where he is so she can a least hear his heart

For some really weird reason this song makes me think of Midna from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, especially when she sings "I'm always in this twilight, in the shadow of your heart", because Midna is a Twilight 'being' (for want of a better word) who hangs about in Link's shadow. Sorry, I just had to add my geeky bit their!

I love this song so much even though it makes me cry my little eyes out. It's beautiful. My cousin, best friend, my hero, he past a way a little under a year ago. I haven't had the moon or the stars since he left me here in this dark place. Lifes a blur now, a haze, the twilight. for me there's something epic in this song, i mean the screaming, the loudness... it's something so overwhelming that I feel like a tiny part of an enormous harmonious system while listening to it. very few songs have such impact on me.

My ex, we were so good together, matched each other's energy in music, body, soul. But he had major battles with his mind. It sucked me in to his world. Was too painful, I hurt too much. Oh my GOODNESS!!!! I've been thinking about this song for literally the past 24 hours. There are SO many interpretations and opinions about this song and they are all very awesome! It is a strong, beautiful song. The voice and the melody just strike through your mind. But you are all wrong! Her being "blind" means she is in love- "in the shadow of his heart." When his heart stopped, he probably left her. "Twilight,"meaning uncertainty and like a pause in time. "His heart stopped in the darkness, so darkness she became"- means he later fell in love with her too so she stay with him in that state of darkness too.

Everytime I listen to this song, I get such a great feeling. Maybe this is a little weird 'cause of the text but I feel great.
Another positive aspect: The Vampire Diaries have chosen this song to intoduce the new season. Great combination.

Although this song could easily look as those its a love song about a man she may have loved...the more I read it ( and my first impression was this)...I feel that it is more about someone dying in her life. Could be anyone.

I think Florence is gorgeous and my one wish would be to meet her and ask her about this song. It makes my heart POUND everytime I listen to it. Florence somehow brings such raw emotion into all of her songs and to me that is true art.

I think this song is about a woman who is completely subsumed by the love of a man...a man who loves her so much that no one else can have her, one who cuts her off from everyone but himself. I think that this song is about a girl falling in love with a boy. Unfortunately, he stops loving her, and she's left in the dark, not knowing how he feels about her. The map represents her trying to find a way to get over him, but every time she tries, he does something to pull her back in.

i think this song is about a girl, being stunned by a guy, and she falls madly in love. but her love leaves her, and everything became dark, and subdued. she still loves him, and is always in the shadow of her love for him. when she sleeps, she dreams of him, hearing his heart beat, so she follows it, and wakes up in the dark. she then tries to get over it, tries to find her way back, she finds him, and realises that he is in the same position as her, lost without each other. but they never got back together, just stayed lost with each other.

I believe that this song is about a girl who fell in the deepest love you can have. But I believe it was a bad maybe even abusive relationship. The song is about a girl being shot in the eye. She goes blind and becomes this one-eyed monster. The eye is everywhere throughout society (AOL, CBS, the back of the dollar bill). Her husband is also shot. He dies and she lives with one eye. They find each other in the next world because they will rule over it.

This is a FANTASTIC song, and her live performances are IMMENSE (Y) Florence is a truly professional artist, like Leona Lewis, or Kylie Minogue.

Should have been the theme song for the movie Avatar. Incredible! This whole album has a heartbeat and breathes. I haven't been moved by music for a long time.

This song speaks everything that I have been feeling recently, truely. I am trapped in the shadow of my lover's heart for years, and I dont have the strength to escape and step into the light :( "the darkness I became". God I sound so pathetic hehe. At least this song has put into words how I feel.

I didnt get that her loved one actually left or was a breakup song. I think this is talking about how deep a romance can get. Love is often times described as blind and if youre in love the sense of time(no dawn no day) exists. Also when youre in love you feel that love is all that matters everything else can be darkness in comparison to this person so if they are not there the world doesnt exist I do feel there was some conflict in the relationship but when she says "then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too, so I stayed in the darkness with you" I thought that symbolized he loved her the same way she loved him because she was in the darkness from the falling star that fell from his heart and caused her to go blind. So when she implies he is in the darkness it makes the entire song fit from his perspective...they were looking for each other, in love with each other, trusting their hearts to lead them to one another....Just my interpretation... :)

This is one immense song. Possibly my favourite off the album along with Howl. Florence is an amazing artist. My friends say that she not a very strong singer but the whole point I think is that her voice is natural and you have to kinda search for the meaning of the song rather than just stating the obviious in people like bloody miley cyrus's music. I fell in love with this song instantly. The way that is very abstract - not telling a specific story - allows for a wide range of interpretations and makes it easy for a lot of people to relate to it. Which is exactly what I think characterizes good art.
Personally I relate it to my own relationship to a girl. I love her and have done so for a few years. I was with my boyfriend for about a year, when I was sent to a long-term treatment center in Utah. When I got out, I was denied contact with him, sent to San Francisco (we are from L.A.) and denied furthur contact. After over a year and a half, I still longed for him, though we had both "moved on".

you guys are so gay. you're all about "artistic expression" but you instantly shoot the twilight thing down because it's not "edgy, dark, or deep" enough for whatever great sense of artistic understanding you have that no one else possesses. it invokes a lot of inspiration and beauty, as well as depth for other people, so you should see it for what it is instead of being so narrow minded. if this song makes people feel happy or provokes creativity because it is easily superimposed over the new moon story, so be it. get over yourselves.

to me this song could be about something i can relate to..an emotionally abusive relationship. She falls in love with him so fast, and in the blindness of the love she lets him take everything, until she has nothing left - 'you left me in the dark'...and even though hes done this to her, her love still remains, when he needs her help she'll come running - 'so i stayed in the darkness with you'. It also sounds as though she can't bring herself to ever leave him - 'and knew that somehow i would find my way back'..but i think the most important live has to be: 'in the shadow of your heart'...it describes perfectly what it feels like to love someone that is no good for you, doing everything for them, but living under their rules and under their thumb, not being able to let go.

My interpretation... For the first time in her life she felt real love,but it was so intense she was afraid to tell him as she was hurt before and doubted his sincerity, she could only see twilight of his heart-and hoped to know if his love was as sincere as hers.

I adore this song. I have no idea what it means to Florence, but it speaks to me deeply. I am parted from my husband at present - we are desperately in love, but we have to be physically apart at the moment through no fault or choice of our own. i think this purely represents how when love hits it can dominate ever thing else and 'blind' you in many ways .. for instance the other person usually can do no wrong.other things you once saw as important friends etc , are no longer as important.

And knew that somehow I could find my way back'
maybe a lost love she wishes to gain back ..
whatever it means the wasy she uses the universe touches upon fate and whether things are really written in the stars , adds a new edge on love.

This is my favourite song since my father showed me two weeks ago.
I think, it's a very mysterious song. The text sends pictures into my mind. I think it's about her boyfriend, who has depressions and because she loves him so much, she's depressive too.

All of Florence + the machine's lyrics are amazing, they're so beautiful and poetic. When I hear this song I feel complete, just as I feel she feels when she says "you were in the darkness too
So I stayed in the darkness with you". It makes me feel almost invincible. There are many 21st century songs that are this beautiful, let's put it that way. :]
