Florence & The Machine - What The Water Gave Me (Demo) Lyrics

The song's meaning to me is clear. The first stanza says "something has been anchoring me into a "dream" world"(I mean that she has been living in denial, living a lie so to speak.) also that "in this fake dream world, I have also been somewhat aware of what's happening in reality, but not really. I don't live in reality (hence the tourist metaphor). then she realizes "the thing that keeps me living in denial (or held me under) is you" her love for her lover keeps her immersed in a lie. In the second stanza By saying "no more dreaming of the dead, as if death had been undone" she is saying "I see the truth now, I am aware of reality and that I must live in it" that she knows now she wrongly though she could defy reality,(IE undoing death) but knows she can't dream of it anymore, because it is impossible. The line "no more calling like a crow..." Means she no longer can pretend her love can hear her, or pretend that her words have any effect on the situation. the rest says she can no longer pretend to be in love, her fake (or "wrong") world no longer can be her reality. the third stanza is just talking about how her dream world was falling apart, and that the "shaking of her bones" made her fantasy fall apart. and her "eyes are now wide open" she is awake and sees the truth behind her illusions. snow white fixing the circuit board means that the old world is being pieced together to make it whole, that a new world that she will live in is being made from scraps of an outdated reality. and the "someone" through the hidden door means that a person (her lover) is entering her new world through a secret passage,and he will follow her into the new world too. The title "blinding" means that when she saw the truth, when she opened her eyes, it was so powerful and overwhelming it actually hurt. that he truth was too much for her to handle.

Florence has one of the most amazing voices in the entire universe, this one of my favourite songs by her...I really need to go out and buy her albums...Florence + The Machine could just be my favourtie bands ever!!!!♥

This album is so much about deaths and pain and love it's so heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time Florence feels like the soundtrack to my life each song is different like a new day some are more sad than others but they all are intoxicating and addictive

Literally, what was done in the dark is being brought to the light. You can feel her presence and suddenly realize she's alive. This time she's wearing an engagement ring and with her is a gorgeous auburn-haired man wearing the twin ring. It's a stake in your heart as they are kissing in front of you. She's no longer available, that's why the lover had to settle for you. That's when horror overcomes you as you realize it's your own plug that was pulled.

well, i think you all should keep in mind the fact that she is a lesbian...
so keeping that in mind i think she's been blinded by the social expectations of love.

It sounds like a song about a girl whose boyfriend has died, but she can't let go of him

Literally, I took it as a girl in a coma. She is in some dreaming state never quite awake. Trying to call out to some boy over her body (in a romantic place, part of her dream). But one day her eyes flew open to why she was the was she was, and the plug was pulled. As she slips away she realizes who it was who held her under, who did this to her.. Her lover.

Shes snow white, naive but trying to put the pieces together, while figuring that person she thought she knew fades is erased... while she dies.

Basically waking up to the fact you're blinded by love and your lover isn't who you thought he was. And it just kills you.

Communicating 2 the dead? HAHAHAHARDLY SO! No more dreaming of the dead as if death had been redone, this means he is henceforth "dead" to her (not dead actually) while she feels revived like a newborn. This is woman facing the serpent that beguiled her in the garden, this time she knows to refuse the forbidden fruit. The fantasy falls away and she's still standing. She slips through the hidden door where she's safe and comforted among the alive.

If this is a woman's experience (it could as easily be a man's) of widowhood as her soul grieves uncomforted having been gaslighted so that no one takes her seriously until she calms down. Then people begin to realize too many things she's said make too much sense to continue dismissing. She hasn't been silenced with that apple but is like a survivor of the Holocaust not living in denial. Behind that door she is comforted and safe without needing to get even; she got AHEAD.

realisation. the girl is in love with the dream world, the "perfect" one she has made up in her mind, but it all falls away.

i think its about death. and a girl who is obsessed with it and trying to contact the dead so she can talk 2 the one she loves who has died.

there is a reason the song is called blinding. its about realizing that you have been caught in your feelings of love. its a moment of finding or waking up, respectively. it becomes clear, "the spell is broken" or "my eyes flew open"...coming to the conclusion that your love held up a relationship that was wrong from the beginning and that this love blinded you from seeing the truth...
and now there will be no more dreaming like a girl so in love.
i think everyone knows this feeling like waking up and realizing that love made you behave like a different person...

It's a modern day Snow White. Snow White was asleep (at least at one point). But she also day dreamed for a prince (aka: a boy) to come and "save" her - eventually a prince did come and save her; kissed her to wake her from her sleep. Florance & the Machine seems to be taking that story, that idea at least, and making almost a pun on it. Except this Snow White didn't need a prince or a boy to wake her, she woke herself up ("no kiss, no gentle word could wake me from this slumber, until I realize it was you who held me under") and realized that all this wishing and hoping is false. And as said above, more or less, she felt it in her bones and through her body... "it" meaning the truth of it all.

I think it's about coming out of a depressed state

I actually think it is about how we are told to perceive the world, specifically, relationships, fairy tales, that are not true, loosing innocence and understanding the world is rough and nothing is perfect.

I feel I can relate to it as being a girl in love with the wrong one. I'd wish I had found Florence + The Machine earlier, I can relate to some of her songs and even better 6 months ago.

I feel I am the girl in the song. I can't let go of my first boyfriend in my heart. But I think I might be starting to 'stitch up the circuitboard'...

I think it is about a girl who is kept in a dream with her love until she looks around and everything is cracking and fading away into dust and the person that she loves is gone, possibly as good as dead if not dead already. she is trying to deal with this by drugs and make-believe while convincing herself that this is the reality.

The protagonist has been in an unhealthy relationship, and finally realizes it cannot - and shouldn't - be this way anymore. She wakes up to the realization that she must move on. "Dreaming of the Dead" is an analogy - not actually dreaming about a dead person, she means she'll no longer be absorbed by something that cannot be ("as if death was undone"). She's been in love with the wrong world...the wrong person. It's actually quite empowering - she is able to take steps to move on, because she knows that's what's best. He won't ever be what she needs. She finally understands that.

This song is beautiful. As for the meaning, I believe you can see it the way you want to see it, either about the girl whos boyfriend died, or a girl who doesn't feel she belongs to this world and is in love with the world of dreams, or a girl who's in love with a wrong person.. That's the beauty of music, you can see it the way it suits you and your life.

I think its about a girl whos boyfriend has died. who turns to drugs to help herself, "snow white" another name for cocaine, and "stitching up your circuitboards" messing up your brain.

....it actually seems like it's talking about Snow White to me. I mean, think about it, she is asleep, she says she is no longer dreaming of the day that death will be undone, it reeeeeeeaaaaaallllllllyyyyyy sounds like Snow White.

its about a spaceship landing in a sunflower field where they find a large cow eating a crow. the girl comes out of spaceship and milks the cow who produces black milk. its quite clear actually

i think its about a girl who was in love with a boy who died. she's in love with him and he's from the world of the dead, and she feels like she belongs with him, not in the living world. 'no more dreaming like a girl so in love with the wrong world' it seems really clear to me. And because crows are always in graveyards, she's like a crow calling for her dead lover 'for a boy, for a body in the garden.'

It's about someone young who is slowly dying but has told no one and refuses to admit it. They are going round pretending everything will be ok. They are in love and can't bring themselves to tell anyone that they are dying.

the song is basically about an NPD or borderline personality disorder girl who suddenly realises all the parentified relationships she's been having are bullshit...

isnt it about a girl, the narrator, who is "growing up" and realising that what surrounds her is not where she is wanting to be (a girl who has experienced death and love but it doesnt really matter in this world...) ? just a thought....

these are the lyrics to blinding! you must have the song named wrongly. and i definitely dont think is about death. its about being with someone who you think your in love with and you've blinded yourself to anything that is wrong and need to wake up.

Definitely must be about the death of someone you love and dream about. Being trapped in the dream world (the wrong world) and having to wake up from it can be quite a painful thing to do.
