This is such a beautiful song! It's about how love blocks clear reasoning. They say love is blind and that's what this song is about. Light is reason and darkness is the way you think when youre in love. My favorite verse is.

"I took the stars from my eyes and I made a map.
and I knew that somehow I could make my way back,
then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too,
so I stayed darrkness with you."

For just a moment, she got her clairty back and saw a way to go safely back to the way things were before him, but then she somehow got proof that she blinds him as much as he blinds her, so she chose to stay with him.

Amazing, I adore this song.

i think this could also be about twins. because to lose one's twin is to lose the other half of you. i know it's not about twins but i made up a scenario for it. maybe there were a pair of twins that got into a car crash and one died. the song is about the twin that is alive and they are in a coma barely holding onto life but they feel the emptiness, they can feel that their twin is dead. so the line about making a map and then hearing the heartbeat in the darkness, that would be that the twin in the coma is starting to pull back to the living world but they hear/feel their twin on the Other Side so they decide to go to the twin on the Other Side instead of waking up.

Such an amazingly beautiful song, I love it! Well written and just a wonderful song to listen to! Can't say anything that hasn't already been said!
