For me it's about her spirit and her inner voice. Her real passion. I feel she had compromised and kept trying live with that compromise. Rationalizing that she was happy with the life she had chosen to lead but her real self was screaming to get out. She wanted to keep the status quo and buy the lie of happily ever after, to be "normal" and live the American dream but she couldn't lie to herself forever, she couldn't kill that inner voice of truth. UShe couldn't sit back anymore and lie to herself that the life she had short changed herself into believing was all she was worthy of was enough. She realized that she wasn't happy and that it was time for change.

I believe there is a small error in the lyrics. I believe that the line should be, "I picked up the bird and above the DIN said [That's the last song you'll ever sing.]" A din is a loud discordant noise.

It was an old story to scare kids into doing the tight thing before Florence got it. But heck did she do it justice and more.

I love her she's so creepy in the good way... she always make me feel like flying high.

It reminds me of Tell-tale Heart. It's definitely about guilt, and her conscience eating her away. She's trying to quiet it down, but it doesn't work. Tweet, tweet, tweet. :) Love it. Her vocals are amazing, and the way the song goes from solemn to fast-paced to dramatic is... arresting. :)

i think this song represents something within her that she is trying to ignore, she tries to kill it so she doesn't have to deal with it. But it comes back through her inner self, and in her dreams. she cant escape it. Think that if there is a niggling feeling that you have, and it wont go away, its always gunna come back. Better to listen and acknowledge it, deal with it, otherwise it's going to eat at you.

i think the bird represents her feeling of guilt, it comes to her and stays, she doesnt want it, wants to stop the singing.wants to get this bird away like stopping an inner voice. she doesnt want to hear it and promises to never do it again but its getting louder. she tries to kill it (metaphorically) but it stays in her mind and in her dreams and i think the contradiction between this loud bird or voice respectively and her disability to get it out (but i couldnt scream and i couldnt shout) is very important for the intention of this song...

The song is about having a guilty conscience. She said or did something and its been eating away at her (the bird singing and her being afraid the neighbors would hear) and her trying to justify it (inviting him inside to reason) but it just keeps eating away at her (louder and louder singing) she tries to destroy it and realizes that she cant and that all the singing was really coming from her because she felt guilty about what she said or did.

I don&#039t think I really comprehend all the subtle meanings of the lyrics here, but in general, I would say that the song is *excellent*. The rhythm, the rhimes, the intelligent thinking of the lyrics, the performance with just the instruments that are needed,the freedom of interpretation of the listener regarding the lyrics, etc...

I think this song is about someone who said something, and another person overheard and keeps threatening to reveal what she said, which is why she does things like breaking the 'bird's neck and stuff. Love this song, and Florence.
