Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - 40 Day Dream Lyrics

Artist: Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

Album: Up From Below

Genre: Rock

  • Songwriters: Alex Ebert

Well, I been sleeping for forty days and I know
I'm sleeping 'cause this dream's too amazing
She got gold doorknobs where her eyes used to be, yeah
One turn and I learned what it really means to see

It's the magical mystery kind, must be a lie
Bye bye to the too good to be true kind of love
Oh no, I could die
Oh, now I can die

Hey, I been sleeping for sixty days
And nobody better pinch me, bitch
I swear I'll go crazy

She got jumper cable lips
She got sunset on her breath now
I inhaled just a little bit
Now I got no fear of death now

It's the magical mystery kind, must be a lie
Bye bye to the too good to be true kind of love
Oh no, I could die
Oh, now I can die

It's the magical mystery kind, must be a lie
Bye bye to the too good to be true kind of love
Oh no, I could die
Oh, now I can die

i think it's about tripping... and your thoughts about love/the person you're in love with while you're tripping.

okay guys sometimes we just have to listen to the music, feel it, enjoy it and imagine what you want to see, you do not have true meaning when you hear the song becomes yours. The music is subjective

as the person on april 30 said, i also feel the beatle influence in the song!!! that's because i'm a beatle lover/fan and when i heard this song i loved it and when i heard it more times i realised about that influence, which can be found in the lyrics ("to the too good to be true kind of love" reminds me of "that's the kind of love that is too good to be true" (thank you girl), and "magical mystery kind" of "magical mystery tour", for example),in some parts of the music or the essence of that music, and in the way it is sung sometimes (which most of all reminds me of john lennon). beautiful song!! haven't studied enough yet to discuss on what it talks about

did anyone ever think that maybe he's reached a spiritual place that's fulfilled him 100%? kiss the lips of the divine mother and you'll know death as life and life as death, and either he's been there, or he's been real close. maybe its a real woman, maybe its a figurative one.

If I may add, I agree with the comment below me, this song is beautiful for what it is. But, to some love IS a drug, so there's a possibility it's about both. I just find it absolutely wonderful no matter what the true meaning is. And you won't really know unless you ask Alex yourself, so let's not argue about something we cannot prove. I for one am honored to get the chance to hear such amazing poetry and listen to such a great band, as I'm sure you all are as well.

OH MY GOD. What does it matter? Whether it's about drugs or love is up to the listener. Everyone will think of this song as something that THEY can relate to. So just shut up and appreciate a great song for what it is-just a great song. So lets get over ourselves and practice some tolerance for other people's opinions and views...and yes, that means the people who love Twilight matter too.

yeah, drugs and love not twinkling emo kid vampires. Twilight is an overrated teen chick flick. Edward Sharpe is a mesonic being who constantly falls for women and drugs, constantly referring to 'her' shows some romantic meaning. The 'gold doorknobs' could be the seeds(this made me realise they do look like golden doorknobs). When you are stoned, you feel like a you're at your prime and achieved ultimate happiness, so it's either maintain your high or die because you'll never be that happy ever again. Yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion... but the Twilight comment... I'm better off saying it's about Fast and the Furious and the gold doorknobs are customised headlights and he's been driving for 60 days. And sunset breath is NOS and jumper cables... (I'm high so excuse my errors)

This is definitely about being in love. It's surreal. And if it's a dream, I don't ever wanna be woken up. When you're in love it's like you're living a dream. Everything's perfect and surreal. He's saying that if he wakes up from this he may as well die because if this isn't the true blue real thing, what's the point?

I dont know about everyone on here, but to me it is pretty obvious that this song is about a girl, just like Home is. I really dont think it has anything to do with drugs at all. You have to read between the lines a little more than that. He is living a dream because he is in love, not because of drugs, that is too obvious. also he started the idea of Edward Sharpe being about a guy who is sent to earth to save it but ends up being distracted by women, it was originally intended to be a novel and the idea turned into a band.

i think what he means when he says he's been sleeping for forty days is the length of time he's been in love with a girl, and he doesn't want to wake up from it because he loves the feeling, but at the same time he's also asking if what he's calling love, the real thing,or if it's one of those too good to be true relationships,i think it's absolutely beautiful.

can´t really agree with neither one of you, except for that it is a really beautyful, awesome Song and a great band!!! but twilight.. ?? I dont see it.. The one person who wrote he/she is reminded of twilight by this song cuz´ he/she read the book during, is the only comment which makes sense in this comparison. But this awesome band, in my opinion, does not have anything to do with twilight.. but thats just me..

it is about drugss and a significant other alex aka edward sharpe is always falling in love with women so h is singing about falling in love with this girl but also opening up her mind to drugs

  • Anonymous

its about a significant other. simple meaning backed up by a powerful, almost anthemic melody and epic lyrics. it's like an answer to that "there is no true love" sort of feeling common to this generation, a concept beautiful enough to attack our hearts and make us question if this too good to be true kind of love can be found.

  • Anonymous

it's obviously about drugs, without a doubt.
"I inhaled just a little bit, now I got no fear of death"
    pretty obvious.

  • Anonymous

Really twilight? Twilight? your comparing this band to some vampire teen chick flick. Thats just disgusting. Secondly, I think it is a combination of both true love and drugs. Which is okay because this band is the modern hippy and I support them for that.

  • Anonymous

Holy shit you teeny boppers this song is not about forbidden love and has nothing to do with twilight so dont ruin a great band. its about drugs. you guys are ridiculous. obviously youve never tripped before, this song is spot on.

  • Anonymous

lol plz do not compare this song or band to twilight they are on a whole different level..

  • Anonymous

whatever i like twilight but it dosn't relate to this song at all. twilight is like forbidden love. this kick ass song is totally not about forbidden love. i think the "i could die" part is about like it would be ok to die now because he has felt true love.

  • Anonymous

i feel the beatle influence in this song. dont you guys? what do you guys think?

  • Anonymous

yoooo just so you know the singer is Edward Sharpe.... thats just a character that he made up. the dudes name is Alex.... which is why in home she calls him alex haha

  • Anonymous

twilight is incomparable to musical genius. This is a beautiful and amazing song that shows no parallel to teenage pop culture.

  • Anonymous

You know the only reason they're comparing this song to Twlight is because the Singer's name is Edward. God, Twilight's found a way to ruin all the good in this world.

  • Anonymous

to the anonymous comment about twilight- the first part is an insult to the song. twilight doesnt even begin to compare. though i do know what you mean, with the love and all, but please dont relate to eddy sharpe to twilight, please

  • Anonymous

this song is fantastic, i was reading the twilight saga as thhis song came out and each time i heard it it reminded me of the spirit of twilight. it could also easily be a song that relates to the girl you used to love, once you two were over, could you truely die? i know for every single person the answer to that will be different
