Drive-By Truckers - Used To Be A Cop Lyrics

Artist: Drive-By Truckers

Album: Go-Go Boots

Genre: Country

  • Songwriters: Patterson Hood

Used to be a cop but I got to be too jumpy
I used to like to party 'til I coughed up half a lung
But sometimes late at night I hear the beat a-bumping
I reach for my holster and I wake up all alone

I used to have a wife but she told me I was crazy
Said she couldn't stand the way I fidget all the time
Sometimes late at night I circle around the house
I look through the windows and I dream that she's still mine

I got scars on my back from the way my Daddy raised me
I used to have a family until I got divorced
I've come too far from the things that could save me
I used to be a cop but they kicked me off the force
I used to be a cop 'til they kicked me off the force

Used to have a car but the bank came and took it
I'm paying for a house but that bitch lives in it now
The children that we had who now won't even look at me
Guess there's nothing left to lose, nothing matters anyhow

Got a scar on my arm from that bullet that once grazed me
I keep it in a box to remind me where I've been
That thin blue line was the only thing that could save me
I used to have a badge but they made me turn it in

And I used to play football, but I wasn't big enough for college
But I passed the entrance exam, first try and on my way
The Police Academy gave me the only thing I was ever good at
But my temper and the shakes, and they took that thing away

Used to have a wife but she just couldn't deal with
The anger and tension that was welling inside me
Sometimes late at night I circle 'round the house
I look through the windows and I remember how it used to be

I look through the windows and I remember how it used to be

A story of what is happening to people all over this country and maybe the best DBT song ever. Sure people with problems can't always see them for what they are, but as Neil Young said "though my problems are meaningless - that don't make them go away"

These problems are not meaningless however, and it is a brilliant essay on what I ASSUME - ex. ( ass {out of{ u and me ) - is a fictional character making him all the more meaningful, universal and even relevant. This (and it could happen to anyone) and wouldn't if people would keep their noses in their own business.

It is operatic and profound on so many levels that it would take a long time to properly pay homage to the lyrical and musical qualities of the writing and the performance herein.

That's why the Drive By Truckers are THE best american band ever - there are no holes in their game and if there were they would happily acknowledge that they are just a band that is TRYING. (without any sense of self appointed authority or importance) Essentially, the highest purpose for almost anyone or any institution, because while trying they are not criticizing others and they KNOW that that is not their purpose.

Gee I want to write a book about them. Thanks for reading. David James, Missoula, MT, March 2011.
    thanks to the entire band!
