Carrie Underwood - Temporary Home Lyrics

Artist: Carrie Underwood

Album: Play On

  • Songwriters: Luke Robert Laird, Zac Maloy, Carrie Underwood

Little boy, six years old
A little too used to being alone
Another new mom and dad, another school
Another house, that'll never be home
When people ask him how he likes this place
He looks up and says with a smile upon his face

This is my temporary home, it's not where I belong
Windows and rooms that I'm passing through
This is just a stop on the way to where I'm going
I'm not afraid because I know this is my temporary home

Young mom on her own
She needs a little help, got nowhere to go
She's looking for a job, looking for a way out
'Cause a halfway house will never be a home
At night she whispers to her baby girl
Someday we'll find our place here in this world

This is our temporary home, it's not where we belong
Windows and rooms that we're passing through
This is just a stop on the way to where we're going
I'm not afraid because I know this is our temporary home

Old man, hospital bed
The room is filled with people he loves
And he whispers
"Don't cry for me, I'll see you all someday"
He looks up and says "I can see God's face"

This is my temporary home, it's not where I belong
Windows and rooms that I'm passing through
This was just a stop on the way to where I'm going
I'm not afraid because I know this was my temporary home
This is our temporary home

This is an emotional song...before my mom was sick I listened to this quite a bit...it was too hard to listen to the last months before my mom passed..once again, with tears, I can listen through the entire song...it's a great one!

I sat on my couch holding my sons ashes, he passed away in February of 2004, the month after my sweet mother went to be with the Lord. The saying on his urn says, "I am with you always!" Thank you Carrie for writng such a sweet song.

My 23 year old son passed away on June 16th 2011 & we learned through his facebook posts that he loved this song (as did I). A friend sang it for us yesterday to begin his funeral service. I came to this site to print the lyrics for his elderly grandparents who because of their ages and hearing couldn't hear the lyrics. Three other songs were sung as well that were my son's favorites...the lyrics to all three, especially "The Man I Want To Be.

My young daughter, Jennifer Lynn Johnson, died Nov. 16, 2010, of a heart attack. Quite unexpectedly. As we were gathering her personal effects, her cell phone rang and her ringtone was "This Is My Temporary Home." My first thought was, "how prophetic." Those words are what we are having etched on the slab at her final resting place, changing "Is" to "Was." Her headstone is a heart.

This song brings alot of thought to the table. Three different lives each touched by the same phrase in three different ways. Carrie's voice really brings out the emotion of the lives involved. I love the boldness and determination of the young mother, the soft spoken words of the innocent boy, and the complete, resigned life of the older man. What great musical talent she has been given. Thank you for allowing me to enjoy music this way.

Thanks for this song. I'm a really old timer and this reminder sets just the right tone so that one can focus on the real meaning of why we are here. Actually, I don't believe in reincarnation but in the event that I'm wrong, I want to come back as a country and western singer. Things were different when I was young and where I grew up. Following a path of what you wanted to do was just not a possibility. It's wonderful that young people today have the opportunities available to them that they can do what they want.

Who knows? Maybe I can still be a country singer before I meet my maker!!!

Thank you for this lovely, stirring song.
