Bird’s Townes Van Zandt cover is pleasant, but doesn’t quite live up to the original. Van Zandt’s stripped-down acoustic finger-picking pairs with his calm, mellow voice to make the message hit home. Even at Bird’s slower tempo, the thick harmonies (a la Mumford) don’t suggest “ease my pain.”
