America blearing in my ears all day
America, I don't see the glory of your ways
The oldest money flows through a bloodline
We'll see if your empire stands the test of time

Don't wanna, I don't wanna
Be a slave to the sons of privilege
Don't wanna, I don't wanna
Be a slave to the sons of privilege

Sweet Lady Liberty
You are the lost though you are free
And what hides beneath
Can't tell the wolves from the sheep

Sweet Lady Liberty
You are the lost though you are free
And what hides beneath
Can't tell the wolves from the sheep

America grin and bare the resentment of the world
With all your ugliness and arrogance self-worth
Desperate to grease the gears of the hideous machine
The swine, they writhe and praise the infallible regime

Don't wanna, I don't wanna
Be a slave to the sons of privilege
Don't wanna, I don't wanna
Be a slave to the sons of privilege

Most musicians are smarter than they lead on when you delve into their lyrics. This song is basically a big fuck you to the big brass knobs in washington and wall street that control the country (ie the bankers, bilderberg group, rockafellers, rothchilds who are in this case the sons of privilage and also referred to by the line saying "the oldest money flows though the bloodline'). It also alludes to the new world order in the line 'I don't wanna,
Be a slave to the Sons of Privilege,

Sweet Lady Liberty,
You are the lost, though you are free,
And what hides beneath,
Can't tell the wolves from the sheep.'

the people you think are there to be good and bring change (Obama) are actually designed to make the people believe one thing, then lead them to slaughter.

Americans keep getting their liberties taken away (IE like the patriot act which allows for unwarrented wire tapping and spying and the new guns law which is on the horizon to stop anyone on the no fly list to carry or own guns)

and plus With them all being candian there most likley pissed off about the North American Union (I.E the abolishment of state sovereignty and boarders to make something very similar to the EU)

America, Grin and bare the resentment of the world,
With all your ugliness and arrogant self-worth.

Pretty much sums it up. Every other free nation (Yes they do exist) in the world gets sick of constantly hearing about how wonderful Americans (or at least those in the US media) think America is. Ok you live in a Democracy, I live in a Democracy, they live in a Democracy, we all live in Democracies... No country is perfect, so most people from strong Democracies look at other Nations as equals but people in the American media seem to act like they think the US is perfect and look down their nose on the rest of the world... Anyway that's the perception outside of the states. I'll take my free health care and low violent crime rate any day.

Maybe instead of doing the same as the last the whole of america wouldn't be a awful stereotype(awful stereotype in this situation)tbh im british i don't really care on the race/religion you are because anyone could be anything and we can't let anyone put us in our place unless you feel that way

Comment by Anonymous

Obviously this isn't directed at all Americans, just the stereotypical version. Then again, we know nothing as audience members, Americans could be a metaphor and Lady Liberty to. We never know, can only guess.

Just because somebody wrote it in a song it doesn't mean its a personal attack. All u Americans are taking it waaaaay too personally. This is an expression of inward thoughts and feelings. P.s. Canadians if we don't watch what we say and do were gonna turn into what u guysare calling the Americans. Canada FTW :)

eh, money is power in alot of places.

and I'd rather be lost and free and understanding but controlled.

but if all i heard all day was random shit about canada id be mad to i guess

You American's are so clueless to your own bullshit. Your a bunch of fucks that all possess guns in fear and kill each other and say ohh patriotism this patriotism that.

so glad i live in Australia.

Slaves to the sons of privilege is what America has become. The oldest money flows through a bloodline and and we become the slaves of those who inherit the $$$. Money = Power. Don't ever doubt it because it's so obvious.

Okay Fuck people. Chill the fuck out and learn to understand songs as more than the literal meanings. Those of you who fight and stuff, good on you. But seriously, the song isn't about you.

It's about the people who're blind, follow mindlessly, and stuff like that. It's not a shot on you. 'You are the lost, though you are free'. Yes, it is talking about America as a whole. Not as individuals, but as the entire country's actions. And you dumbfuck Canadians, please stop giving us a bad name. Apologies from them to America for them being fuckheads.

their not talking about america in general, their talking about rich capitalists. When they say america they mean the gouvernment not all the people.

I absolutely love AOF's music, even the individual member's solo stuff. This song is quite hurtful, though, lumping the entire nation into one group. My family has served America for three straight generations, and a few before that off and on. I have been to war three times and I am only 23 years old. I think criticism is healthy, especially nowadays, there are alot of chicken-hawks and war profiteers/dodgers. However, wrong or right, I will always defend my country. We are lost, but we are indeed...free. Neither myself or my family has bowed to a monarch or ever will, that freedom and privilege was paid for with the blood of my ancestors and countrymen and will always be sacred.....no song can change that. I will always keep the wolves from the door, and I will be a free man until my last moment.

Thank fuck that they wrote this song! Fuckin' yankees thinking the song is about washington D.C, no I'm pretty sure it's about the entire world, so suckkkk it. Canada rules and st.catharines rules even more!

I LOVE BEING CANADIAN!!!!!!

You know, I've always loved Alexisonfire for their musical talent, but this song's lyrics are extremely ignorant and immature. I don't see any of them doing something to help the cause of social morality; if anything they perpetuate these lifestyles of "ugliness" and "arrogant self-worth". The mere act of degrading an entire country because of some corrupt fools in Washington D.C. is outrageously arrogant in itself! By the way, has America ever forced Canadian soldiers to fight in the middle east? Maybe you've been listening to your shithead friends too long, but please, do everyone a favor and get an education before you complain.

welll they are right america is in a new war every 2 years and they bring in canadian soldiers to fight their battles i will stop critisizing americans when our canadian troops are brought home for good!!!

The only thing you are missing from this song is that you are exactly the type of American they are talking about. You guys love to involve yourself in everything but know next to nothing

Am I missing something? I kind of wish I knew about this song before I purchased the album. I would have had second thoughts just since this song makes it seem like they hate americans but we are hypocite enough to take their money anyways. Maybe I am misinterpreting it.

Comment by Anonymous

if they hate America so much then why are they touring here right now?? get the heck out of our country. go back to freaking canada and stay there

Amen!

Alexisonfire really know how to stick it to America

Love this song and album!
