30 Seconds To Mars - 100 Suns Lyrics

Artist: 30 Seconds To Mars

Album: This Is War

Genre: Rock

  • Songwriters: Jared Leto

I believe in nothing, not the end and not the start
I believe in nothing, not the earth and not the stars
I believe in nothing, not the day and not the dark
I believe in nothing but the beating of our hearts

I believe in nothing, 100 suns until we part
I believe in nothing, not in Satan, not in God
I believe in nothing, not in peace and not in war
I believe in nothing but the truth of who we are

the last line of this song, "I believe in nothing, but the truth of who we are", there is no other words that could describe this line but one word, AMAZING! this song is about the revelation of self upon reality: it is a separate issue with religion's stuff, though. just look how the lyric mentions two opposite things, that exactly exist in reality such as there is no "Good" if there is no "Evil" and stuffs :) anyway this song is just amazing.

Jared and Shannon Leto were raised Catholic. Whether or not they still are is unsure, but in Search and Destroy, it says "Grab your gun, time to go to Hell" which i interpret as he is fighting against Satan/Hell. It later says "Sold my soul,To Heaven and to Hell" which could mean he is unsure of what he beilieves. but it really is irrelevant. In an interview, Jared Leto said that his songs were written for personnal interpretation. So in a way, we are all right. by the way, the correct lyrics of 100 Suns says "I believe in nothing, not in SIN, and not in God". It doesnt say Satan.

For me (maybe only?) this is just a relativation statement after and in reference to "this is war", all said is meant directly in relation to these lyrics.
And to me (after listening to the complete album) this should be clear, and should not disturb any christian, other monotheist, gnostic or whatever human.

At first glance it looks like he is saying that he doesn't believe in God but in actuality it appears he's just saying that he believes in SELF. The lyrics appear to be an affirmation of one's self efficacy. He's achieved much in his life and I would guess that he's acklowledging his own accomplishments as his own not that of God or of Satan. The lyrics do not say that he doesn't believe there is or isn't a God. The fact that there is a reference to an evil "deity" (Satan) is in fact a recognition of the existence of God and evil. In reality it appears he's more agnostic. I've been a fan of TSTM for some time now and when you read all lyrics it doesn't seem like Jared doesn't believe and/or acknowledge God. He simply may be like most of us in that we all have our internal battles as to the presence of God. Where is He? It's an age old question. The other side of this is it's a song. Sometimes you just write what you are thinking about. It's doesn't mean anything more than that.

It's incredibly amazing that in this day and age the thought of someone not believing in God is still so controversial. Actually it's more disturbing than amazing. The way people cling so desperately to their faith and won't accept any questioning of it is very scary. But I came here to get some insight into the lyrics not to get into a religious debate. I still don't know what they mean, but I believe in the beauty of this song.

I agree with the first comment...It's funny cause I'm a Christian and the tone of this song reminds me of a praise song. I totally thought he was going to say he believes in nothing but God, but to my surprise it was the complete opposite. It kinda creeps me out. No true believer would say that.

The song made me cry last night when I was feeling so down, but the emotional outburst was interrupted when I heard the line that he doesn't believe in God. The song's could really mean a lot of things and I think that line is quite ambiguous.

Um also a thought here... perhaps this isn't a song about him lol. Poets write songs coming from other people's perspectives ALL THE TIME. This is what I don't like about people who constantly think they know what a song is about. Unless he comes out and says this song was personal and about himself we will never know.

Seems to me everyone is trying to justify the lyrics. So what? He chooses to believe in what he wants to--he doesn't need our approval. And for all of you waiting to bite my head off for being fair, I beleive in God, and I believe every human being has the personal right to believe, or not, as they so feel is right. So quit wasting your commentary on arguing what he does or does not beleive in. Interpret the lyrics, not the artist.

GOD is GOD. the word (truth) is GOD. i study the bible and Jared seems he know the (truth).

It does indeed look like he's an atheist. I knew Jared had it in him. Common sense, that is. He seems like a wonderful human being, and that includes intelligent. You don't have to be religious to have morals. Thank you, Jared. You are amazing.

It really says not in sin and not in god. Sorry that your idol let you down with his common sense.

I don't think Jared is saying that he doesn't believe in God necessarily rather that we as people have to believe in ourselves and each other and find God within all of us. Just my two cents.

just got their new CD & I LOVE it! However, this song disturbs me a little, esp. the part about "not believing in God". I'm hoping Jared Leto was jut commenting on society in general seeming to turn away from God & wasn't speaking directly about himself. Our only hope is in God in these crazy times!
